MARLER LEADS QUINS AGAINST SAINTS
England and British and Irish Lions prop Joe Marler will lead
Harlequins against playoff rivals Northampton Saints this Sunday
as the Club looks to secure a first home win in the Gallagher
Premiership this campaign.
Marler will lead a side that has seen four changes to the
starting XV that travelled to Exeter last Sunday. Marler is
restored to the starting XV after missing out on last week's
game due to illness, while a second change sees injured hooker
Jack Walker replaced by Academy graduate Jack Musk. Scrum-half
Danny Care will earn his first start of the season while a final
change sees fit-again lock Dino Lamb replace George Hammond in
the second row.
Quins look to return to winning ways as Northampton travel to
South West London. Over the last five matches against the
Saints, Harlequins have been victorious on four occasions, with
the most recent defeat coming as Northampton claimed a dramatic
late victory at the end of the 2021/22 season through a late
James Grayson penalty.
Previewing the fixture, Head Coach Tabai Mason said: “It’s been
a great week in terms of our preparation. The big talking point
for us off the back of last weekend’s narrow loss was the
courage to come fighting back. A lot of teams fold when they’re
31-7 down at half-time, but this team’s DNA is to go and have a
crack and see what happens. To be ahead with 16 seconds to play
was the positive point around it.
“We’ve perhaps been a bit unlucky with injuries and absences so
far this season. Obviously, we’ve had a gradual return of
Marcus, Danny and Andre is still to come back, but you’ve got to
feel for guys like James Chisholm, Tom Lawday, Stephan Lewies,
Alex Dombrandt, Will Collier, Scott Steele and now Jack Walker
who have had injuries disrupt their seasons’ start.
“But that being said, it’s been great to see how other players
have taken their opportunities with both hands so far. We’ve had
some young lads who will be the future of the Club exposed to
first-team rugby. Squad depth is such an important factor in a
league as fiercely competitive as the Premiership, so I expect
we’ll see the benefit of that as the season, and years, go on.
“For us, Northampton taught us a real lesson. They beat us when
we went up there at the end of last season and that game
triggered a lot of our development. Their attacking play is
exceptional.
“So, I’m really excited about playing another positive team in
terms of the quality that will be, but we know it’s going to be
a massive challenge.”

Two changes for Saints ahead of trip to Harlequins
Director of Rugby Phil Dowson has made two changes to his
Northampton Saints starting line-up to face Harlequins on
Sunday, with Angus Scott-Young and Tom Collins coming into the
starting XV.
Scott-Young starts his second Gallagher Premiership match as the
men in Black, Green and Gold head to Twickenham Stoop, while
winger Collins moves back into the No. 11 shirt to make his
130th Saints appearance.
After claiming a dramatic late 32-31 winner in the last meeting
of the two sides, Saints go in search of their second
Premiership win of the season when they head to the Stoop for
the first time since 2021.
Emmanuel Iyogun, Sam Matavesi and Alfie Petch reprise their
roles in the front row for Round 4, with Lukhan Salakaia-Loto
and Alex Coles continuing in the engine room behind them.
Scott-Young takes to blindside flanker as he comes back into the
starting line-up, joining captain Lewis Ludlam and No. 8 Juarno
Augustus in the back row to round off the pack.
Alex Mitchell and Dan Biggar return to man Northampton’s
half-back berths, with Rory Hutchinson and Fraser Dingwall also
named in Saints’ centres for the second consecutive week.
Incoming Collins partners England internationals Tommy Freeman
and George Furbank in the back three to complete the starting
XV, with Oisín Heffernan, Alex Moon, Sam Graham, Ollie
Sleightholme and Matt Proctor among those set to make an impact
off the bench.

I don't suppose anyone has any intel on how long term the
injuries Tabai mentioned are?

I believe Dombrandt should be back in the next few weeks, and
Lewies will probably be out for a few months still.

Probably the best we can do, but I'd have probably handed Matas
a start over Jack at 6. Kenningham is a good player, but our
backrow just isn't quite right. 8 is the biggest problem, but
Matas has looked lively in his cameos and deserves a shot. With
James basically a permanent sicknote, if Ted Hill is available
should Wuss fold he would be my absolute priority.

Surely get Ted Hill in as an injury cap replacement then swap
out Chis and Lewies for him at seasons' end.
Just cant have sicknote players in a reduced cap environment.
I'm sorry but playing 10% of a season doesn't cut it.

I think Kenningham and Evans are fine with Dommers at 8, agree
that with Archie there we do lack a bit of "punch", which Matas
could provide - however he is pretty raw so maybe the coaches
are thinking prudently and looking at that from the bench to
start with.
Picking up Hill from Wuss would be nice move, but I'd imagine
we'd be one of quite a few teams lining up for him should he be
let go.

I'm hoping that we will have the upper hand in the front row -
could be the difference.
Looking at both sets of backs I'd be surprised if this was a low
scoring game.

Absolutely agree. I think we can really dominate them at the
scrum. On our day (and with Marler) we are the best in the
league and Saints are a bit weaker in that area.
We will need to be alive to their running threat...but may just
need to outscore them, I suppose!
Looking forward to a good game on Sunday. We need a win to get
on track after 2 frustrating narrow defeats.
