A classic Quins game. Nail biting til the end despite having a
20 point lead with 20 to go. I do think our back row lacks real
ballast without any of our 8s and it has really showed at times.
How good is Murley at the moment? Still, Jack Nowell and all
that…
Saints look like they could be lethal with some better decision
making. For once we didn’t concede 30… just..

Biggar’s kicks seemed to put us under pressure pretty much every
time, and Furbank was excellent under the high ball. Felt like
we lost those battles today.

The backrow combination we had today is not balanced. We know
why we had out the line up today but we really need a little
more weight in teh backrow. I think that was one of the areas
that Saints started to get on top of with the extra weight and
size of their back row. The guys today played well but as a
unit they were just not big enough.
We need one of Lawday, Baby Chris, Lewies or Dommers back ASAP.
Tigers are a big powerful backrow

On another day we lose that 35-40 something. Saints were very
wasteful. Their skills let them down big time because otherwise
they cut us to ribbons. Biggar was very impressive. Not
convinced by him for wales a lot of the time but is class and
really started putting it to us in the second half. Ludlam
showed us what we are missing without a Dombrandt style
character in the back row. Think our set pieces and breakdown
work is largely what separates us from them. They’ll be there or
thereabouts again for a playoff spot. A lot of “good” teams this
year. A few will miss out.
The good thing is that this team looks like it has points in it
and today was a good efficiency day, which it needed to be. What
Eddie isn’t seeing in Cadan I’ll never know. Definitely got the
best of Freeman, who is the incumbent for reasons I simply do
not understand. That was as good a finish as I have seen at the
stoop in the 20 years I have been going (I am not so young
anymore)
Today is also the day where Lennox put it all together. He’s
been up and down for the first few weeks of the year but today
was pretty much a complete performance from him. A wall in
defence, good turn of pace and some savvy to hit the passers arm
for his try. A brace of turnovers. Right in time for him to be
replaced by a returning Esterhuizen.
I don’t think Marlers looked interested for a while now but
today wasn’t one of those days. Was really good again. Reminds
you how important he is when he plays well.
We are two losses (by three vs a full strength Saracens but with
8-9 starters out, and then by one - where we got hosed by a crap
call by a weak weathervane of a ref) away from being top by
miles. The bye this week can’t come at a better time. Get a few
bodies back and start putting it all together in defence and
then more consistently in attack.

Cant agree re: White. He made fewer tackles than his back row
buddies and went backwards most times. Kenningham, Evans,
Herbst, Lamb, Musk, Marler, Smith, Anyanwu, Marchant all
out-tackled him, and only the front five made fewer metres with
ball in hand.

Haven’t seen the tackling stats so was solely based on what I
saw live - I felt there was a good few times where Saints looked
like they were on the verge of a line break and white made a
good tackle - in particular one in the first half when Collins
stepped back into his inside shoulder, brought him down and
forced the knock on.

I'm sure it wasn't all bad and I'm happy to say he made a couple
of good ones! But he also failed to stop them on the gain line
which was our number one problem, and you need your 8 to do
that. He made no headway with his carries (a couple of times
putting us in real trouble) and his work rate and effectiveness
were both lower than most of his colleagues.
But I don't really expect much else - our 4th choice 8 is not
going to be first team level.

As well as the back row issue, I think we lost out in the aerial
battle today. Frequently Saints won the competition for the high
ball.
The scrum was not as dominant as usual, after a good start.
We also overcomplicated at times. Surprisingly our standard
rolling maul was very effective. Maybe we should have kept it
simple on 5m lineouts.
Still, 5 points in the bag despite a number of key players
absent.

In a view from the stands, thought young Jack Musk had a
cracking game today. Made some strong tackles and generally
went about his business well. Stats may say otherwise today,
haven’t looked, but he and Riley are superb prospects at 2.

We were dominated for a 2nd home league game in a row, lucky to
win and Smith's kicking or is it the tactics are appalling why
the short drop out from under the post? the repeated kicks
straight at the opposition, and the lack of height in the kicks.
His all round game is poor and for every good thing there is 2
bad, and I wouldn't pick him for England.
