machine learning challenge than something you can directly
programme. That suggests that you need a large body of data to
work from - so you’d need to have the balls with sensors (and
possibly sensors on the players) out in the game and widespread
to build a big enough pool of data to get reliable results.

The point of the accelerometer is that it's all the tech you
need. You then just need to see if it was a pass, so you're
right in that it's not just code. To automate it fully would be
a nightmare and probably more expensive than just asking the TMO
to flag any pass that accelerates towards the opposite goal
line.

I'm not sure that any of these would actually prove to be issues
though. The first can be handled by some basic checks of the
direction and magnitude of the acceleration vector, and also the
ref will be looking at it and will be able to tell pretty easily
if the ball was passed or kicked. The other three are accounted
for by using acceleration in the definition of a forward pass
rather than velocity, as acceleration drops the constant term.
I think the issues are much more likely to be to do with the
accuracy and precision of the data, as well as keeping
everything correctly calibrated. There'll probably be about a
thousand other issues that come up in the process of actually
implementing the system which you'd never be able to foresee.

implement an accelerometer/gyrometer to measure whether the ball
has traveled forward relative to momentum. I should think most
6th form colleges could come up with a working prototype between
the IT and physics departments. Just have a beep on the ref's
watch when the ball moves forward out of the hand and it's one
less thing to worry about, no need for a camera to be stationed
every couple of metres along the touchline to suit referees who
don't want to admit they were too far behind the play. Could
probably sort out a pretty reliable offside check at the same
time.

players, pundits, supporters and officials would learn what is
actually forward, and players would adjust their play
accordingly.

calculation on future outcomes like hawkeye for example. The

For an automatic beep for the ref, would you not need quite an
intelligent ball that knows who is in possession and therefore
which direction is forwards?

Yep, also the difference between being carried, kicked and
passed!

In relation to last week's "mistake"/"request for a better
angle", would a spider cam have been the solution?

I guess it potentially could have been. Not sure how easy it
would be to do in smaller stadiums/with smaller stands or open
corners but it attaches in each corner.
Easier alternatives include the ref keeping up with play, and
ARs with their eyes open though.

Do you want to announce now that you'll stop watching in the
11th minute? And then continue commenting throughout the game?
:)

I’m smashed. The mighty hammers won.
I’ll have the game on but only watching for the crap bits

It seems the ref for Saints game is now Tom Foley.
