Agree with that entirely, I was dreading the officiating when I
saw who the ref was but his comms with the players were very
clear and he did what he said, warnings then action, even handed
with both teams

He entirely forgot his own edict after penalising us - Danny was
furious about it - and since when has a bit of chat between
players been a zero tolerance thing? No back chat to the ref is
fine, but to each other? This isn't schools rugby. The game
doesn't need whitewashing just because some yanks might be
watching.
Given how much he frustrated with his approach to the breakdown,
his somewhat random refereeing of the scrum (which we benefited
from), and his ignorance of offside, he should spend less time
worrying about teams having a word with each other and more time
learning his actual job. Most of the decent calls came from his
assistants.

But, after him telling us (and them) to cut it out, why did we
carry on?? It cost us 3 points. I dont have a problem with a
bit of chat, its natural in a game like rugby, but play the ref.

Because the players understood from their captains "no more",
which in every other game means "cut out the aggro", not "play
the match in silence".
The other reason I'm so salty is because having the breakdown
refereed to modern standards is absolutely crucial in conditions
like that, otherwise you just get endless sets of possession
rugby. He fundamentally changed that match by allowing so much
leeway to the side with the ball, both in terms of players
hanging on and supporting players sealing off.

I agree about the breakdown, like I said, the Robshaw non pen
was an awful decision. The chat, I thought it was silly from
us, he told marler to stop, he carried on so he gave a pen. I
think that is fair enough.

No, he told the captains to cut the chat out, then the captains
went back and... well, Robshaw said "no more" and Farrell didn't
appear to say anything. You can blame Robshaw for not explaining
it if you like, but the only times I've seen players penalised
for "chat" is when they're screaming in someone's face, not
literally just talking. I can't blame Joe for thinking the ref
wanted a stop to the pushing and shoving, because that's what it
is in every other match he's ever played in. The ref wanted a
top-tier professional rugby match to be played with no talk
whatsoever between the teams, because he was worried the
americans might get the wrong idea. It's ridiculous.
It was made more ridiculous by him then allowing head-shoving on
the ground later on when Sarries won a decision...

I might be wrong but watching back I thought the ref said to
Marler " Joe, stop it", or words to that effect. He didnt, so
the ref then said "Right ok" and he gave the pen (think it made
it 3-3 or 6-6??). Anyway, I cant see us agreeing on this tbh, I
just think we need to stop shooting ourselves in the foot with
these stupid pens, that can be avoided.

Was it an absolute sell-out?
The Torygraph says 14,800. Which I find a little hard to
believe.

It was announced as an official sell out then they gave the
figure at the top end of 13K. So I'm assuming that was actual
bums on seats while 14,800 was tickets sold.
