I'm just not on board with the idea that England need to bounce
along being mediocre for ages because it might all come good at
the RWC. It's an important tournament, no doubt, but there's a
lot of international matches that aren't the RWC and we're not
Japan, we shouldn't need to be sacrificing performance outside
of the RWC just for a shot at the title.

I’m not either, but that’s where we are.

Because unlike Ireland 4 years ago, France have 2 genuine world
class players in most positions and they're playing at home.

Couldn't agree more - at a time when the English club game is
struggling to generate enough supporters to remain financially
viable, the National team is the focus for people with only a
passing interest in rugby and offers up a dull uninspiring
format most matches.

Squidge's analysis is highly technical and thought provoking but
England are running out of time to experiment and perfect the
attack strategy. It's also very difficult to perfect if you keep
changing the composition of your midfield and drop players such
as Marchant who have the rugby intelligence and adaptability to
embrace it.

Squidge loves to find a reason for everything and sees a grand
plan in the leaves blowing in the wind. I liked the video in
question but it's still speculation and not actual fact.
What other major rugby nation deliberately seeks chaos and
underperformance as a stepping stone to RWC success?
In the professional era...
1999 - Australia were the most consistently excellent side in
the years before the tournament, and won it.
2003 - England were the most consistently excellent side in the
years before the tournament, and won it
2007 - NZ were the most consistently excellent side in the
years before the tournament, and didn't win. SA, though, had
matched them in 2005, fell away in 2006, and rested players in
the Tri Nations away matches in 2007 after suffering a
bucketload of injuries.
2011 - NZ were the most consistently excellent side in the years
before the tournament, and won it.
2015 - NZ were the most consistently excellent side in the years
before the tournament, and won it.
2019 - SA had struggled prior to the world cup and didn't look
all that hot in it, either. England had been excellent for a
while (ranked 2nd in the world in 2017 + 2018, record run of
victories, etc) and made it to the final, where they were
overpowered by their bogey team.
So what does that tell us? It tells us SA are pretty good at
coming together for a world cup. If you're not SA, trying to be
consistently the best team in the world is the best preparation
for trying to win a world cup.
I simply don't buy the idea that England are hiding all their
clever attacking plays. You've got a hugely talented youngster
at 10 scraping around trying to fit into international rugby
while the personnel around him changes constantly. New 9s, new
12s, new 13s, new back rows. And we change our coaching staff
constantly as well. Hoping that all comes good at the world cup
requires a massive leap of faith.

It's not that England are hiding their talented players, it's
that Eddie is making the tactical and player changes he thinks
will carry England to the RWC now, which is later than most
teams have done it, because he wants those changes bedded in by
the time of the RWC but not so familiar to other teams that they
can exploit them.
That said, Eddie does make some odd choices about which players
fit the plan and when they need to be in the squad, and that can
be frustrating to watch.

I don’t really know what to think if I’m honest?
England have been pretty rubbish for the entirety of this RWC
cycle and I’m not sure I see an immediate improvement on the
horizon. I’m not totally convinced Eddie know what he’s doing
anymore, but then another part of me thinks that we could be a
dangerous dark horse.
Here’s my logic. I’d argue we’re on the easier side of the draw.
Argentina and Japan are good teams, but I would still expect us
to be at least second in our group even if we’re not in top
form. That probably means a QF vs. Australia or Wales who are no
better than we are. I’d be at least reasonably confident against
either. Get through the QF and then we’re in semi final with a
bit of momentum vs. an opponent who has had a tougher group and
tougher QF. Who knows?
TLDR, with a bit of luck, I think we can get to the semis
without having to be brilliant. Perhaps it only needs two really
top drawer performances to win the whole thing?

Yes, and we'll probably use them against Argentina and Japan.

Eddie's done a lot of "X player has been given some work-ons and
will remain with his club until he irons those out, the door is
open" etc in the past. And then 9 times out of 10, that player
comes back into the squad soon after and Eddie gets to infer
that it was his "work-ons" that have resulted in this fantastic
new version of X. March will pop up in the autumn squad I
reckon.
