Sad day.
Wasps at least have the right idea. I believe their problem is
that having spent a lot of money buying the stadium and
associated businesses, that should provide income to pay off the
liabilities taken on to purchase it, they didn't get any/much
revenue for 2 years.
Wuss however is a different story, just not income income and
nowhere to get it from it would seem.
I couldn't honestly see the move to Cov working all that well at
the start though, it is a long way to expect existing fans to
travel. There's already a moderately successful rugby side in
the town and you've got tiggers and saints just down the road so
growing a local support base is probably not going to be that
easy.

Have to agree with rocker, never saw this working out and the
further they got away from London, the worse it got. Such as
shame, they used to be our equivalent of what Sarries are now
and what's that, another 60-90 players without a club.
PRL have to look at this and consider thinking out of the box
but I don't see much hope of that. Needs proper businessman in
to run it and really think about the longevity of our game.

Seems bizarre that the salary cap will rise back up to £6.4M
next season (from this seasons £5M) when clubs are struggling
with money so much.

Yes, but of course it's only some clubs that are struggling.
This is why Sarries cheating needed to be badly punished. They
were the one of the prime reasons for inflated wages that made
the league unsustainable. Dad to say it, but imo premiership
rugby is broken. The clubs got sucked into a spiral of ever
increasing wages to get the "best talent" but that is a small
pool of exceptional individuals. The result is spiraling wage
costs. The thought process served to be "if we have the best
players we'll win and then we'll get loads of fans that can pay
for the increased wage bill". Whereas what happened was an
increased wage bill and it just kept going up and up it was
always rising above inflation and above the increased revenues.
Nearly every club is now dependant on a benefactor. A few years
back, before the start of the massive wage hikes they were
several clubs who were close to, or actually, breaking even. I
don't think anyone is now. It isn't a healthy business model.

It's really sad what is happening to Wasps and Worcester and I
hope they both manage to come through it. Doesn't look great at
the moment though. Like others, I wasn't sure of the merit of
the Coventry move - Tiggers and Saints nearby, a decent champo
club in the city and the awkward relationship with the football
club. By its nature, sport attracts dreamers and these people
are sometimes important to realise ambitions but they also need
to be tempered with reality every now and then or trouble
beckons.
Jim Hamilton had Simon Cohen the old Leicester CEO on his
podcast a few weeks back and his comment was that pre the 2nd
marquee player (the fudge when Bath and Sarries were being
naughty before - he says driven by Bruce Craig, clearly no love
lost there) the bigger clubs (Us, Tigers, Saints, Gloucs, Exe
were already there) were well on the way to breaking even. Then,
with the second marquee player - this meant that the senior pros
in the squad then asked the question why they couldn't have more
cash. The cap went up at the same time of cause which caused the
situation we've ended up in now. Pretty much every club losing a
chunk of cash each year.

It will be very sad if Wasps and/or Worcester go the wall.
Premiership rugby needs to get a grip and fast. This threatens
the integrity of the league and could potentially trigger BT
re-evaluating or pulling their TV deal, at which point the whole
things comes down like a pack of cards...
What this may do is hasten the calls for a restructure. A
smaller premiership with fewer games but with internationals
available for the entirety of the season. The sport needs to
drive revenue growth and having star names on show would help.

This is very much needed. We need an international break, it
will allow rest for some of the squad at least and that way it’s
always a fair contest when sides play each other. The fact the
cup games are in the week already (mostly) I’m not sure how we
could accommodate everyone playing each other with a break.
Football makes it work with some quick turnarounds which might
not work (IE a Sat and Weds night game) or playing European cup
games mid week.

Fewer games equals less revenue simple fact. BT will want to
drop their fee if they get less hours of coverage.
The issue is how do we increase revenue, how do we squeeze more
out of BT for the TV rights, more for the international rights
etc. If you look at top flight football per thousand viewers
they get much more. Rugby is supposed to have a more affluent
demographic that watch it so should be worth more per view
UK rights 1.6bn per season 200 live matches = 8 million per
match. or 88k per minute. Average viewer number 1.9m = 4.6p per
viewer minute
BT 40m per season 69 live games = 0.57 million per match or
7.2k per minute average number of viewers per match 210k. 3.4p
per viewer minute.
These are UK main rights only I have excluded international
rights.
If we could get the same amount for each viewer minute as
football it would be over a 1m extra for each club. That would
go a long way at the moment. However is this not what CVC were
supposed to be doing getting the PRL better rights deals

Well that's the problem, the revenue currently isn't enough. We
need a sea change in how the sport works in this country. Clubs
should be able to survive/break even with lower revenue. Which
means paying players less. Which means losing some to European
sides. It doesn't sound great, but the current scenario is
completely unsustainable.

This is really interesting.
Do you have the breakdown for Prem rugby (i.e. number of
viewers, etc)?
Also - 6 nations?
