OT: Saints vs Sarries/Sale - Cup vs League: Questionable
       Fixtures?

Does anyone know how the Premiership Rugby Cup fixtures work
       this season?
Just noticed that Saints are playing Sarries tonight, but then
the Saints 1st team are away in the league tomorrow. Meanwhile
Sarries are on a bye week wk1.
This means that Sarries have some solid 1st team players in
action in the cup, whilst Saints have an 18 year old making
       their debut.
Bit confused by how the fixtures work, and seems a bit unfair on
       Saints.

all the games are midweek so you will expect to see mainly
younger squad players including academy for these games.
As you point out Sarries have put out a strong team, looks like
using this as a pre-season game.
A bit naught in my opinion, but I don't think the rules say
anything about who can or cannot play.

Sarries are effectively making this one of their pre-season
games, namely the second/last one where most clubs bring in the
big names to get some gametime.
I think we need to consider dropping the Prem Cup altogether as
a competition. The format is shot to pieces, a lot of fans won't
be at the games as they're on a weeknight, and there's no real
set standard of player that's playing (as seen here). I know
it's useful for developing players & for players returning to
fitness, but I'd much rather prefer that clubs make informal
arrangements to play friendlies between each other as they see
fit like a few clubs did last season to fulfil those needs.
given the likelihood that we'll be in a 14 team premiership in a
year or twos time,, a formal Cup just seems overkill.

Perhaps a league/cup competition including both Prem and Champ
teams to replace the Monday night A League would help with
developing younger players and re-blooding those returning to
       fitness?

This cup has become a bit of a joke anyway in recent years.
We've been guilty of putting out very strong teams at times too.
I think when we lost the final to Sale during one of the recent
Covid-affected seasons we had more or less a first team out.
There's never been a formal agreement about what sort of team
you should field, so can't complain about what Sarries are doing
now, and makes complete sense for them in terms of their
preparation. Just luck of the draw in terms of how the fixtures
       fall I suppose.
I think the bye week in the premiership is much more unfair, in
that it can fa at a time which suits a club or really disrupts
       them

Serves Sarries right for disrespecting the aims and values of
       the Cup competition like that.

Four years ago when the Prem Cup was created, the aim may have
been to be a showcase for young players and a rest for
       experienced pros.
Since then however, lots of mid-table teams have used it as an
opportunity to win silverware and have therefore played their
       big(ger) guns.
Even a quick look at the 19/20 season (ie before Quins’ recent
rise to the top 4) shows a Quins team with 6(?) tier 1
internationals in the starting XV and another on the bench.
Was that disrespecting the aims and values?

Or have those aims changed since the cup’s inception ?

We’re those six coming back from injury can you remember. It can
depend on how many fit players you have but some clubs have
seemed to play strong squads for this comp.
