Surprised to hear we were paying him that much.
Three concussions in training would go some way to explaining
why he basically never played for us. We obviously still thought
he had something to offer if we wanted him to stay on.
I can't really understand how he thought he deserved a pay rise
but he's more than entitled to ask, the club are more than
entitled to say no and then he's perfectly free to look
elsewhere or retire, which he has.

I get that £100k is a very good salary but his point is, is it
enough to earn £100k for 10-15 years, and then potentially
suffer health problems later in life?
That's going to be the big question for the sport - is it worth
playing as a professional it if you have the potential to earn a
reasonable living without the risk to your long term health?
The salary cap reduction will cut earning potential for a lot of
players, so I would expect to see quite a few players quit if
they deem the rewards not being worth the risks.

I may be in the minority, but I have sympathy for both sides.
The reasons the article stae for his concerns are reasonable -
getting on a bit, only a few years left, injuries that are
currently being touted as causing long-term issues in many
cases, balanced against the potential to start a (probably)
lucrative career.
Flip side, the club were in a difficult position. He could have
turned out to be a superb lock, but they had little to show this
was the greater likelihood. As for £100k, none of us know what
any other player in his position would/should earn. Maybe that's
low for a top flight lock. Maybe it's average.
CSW wasn't a high enough profile player to command strong
external income, as the likes of Itoje can. Oe can assume that
sponsors pay big money to big name players like Marcus, Faz etc.
But not to many of them. Others probably get a nice top up on
their salary. But CSW? Maybe a free car or reasonable value, but
what else?
Maybe one solution would have been a pay per play deal - if he
made the first team, earning more per game. But it's hard to see
how that can be managed under the cap.
One thing it does show is that the difference with football is
getting bigger. The cap is reduced, at a time when football
transfers are at a record high.
