I don't have any bad feelings towards the guy but every time
I've watched him play I've been struck by how slow and lethargic
his play is. I've never seen a more sloth-like second rower.
I would have much preferred we picked up a young, enthusiastic
reject from another prem club. Super underwhelmed, but, plugs a
gap I suppose.
Prove me wrong CM!

Always liked Charlie. Not the world's greatest but a good,
honest grafter. He may have bulked up a little, and the
experience of playing elsewhere won't have done any harm.

I think that this is a good signing. We are a little light in
depth in the locks and it is a position that there tend to be a
few injuries.
But - Can anyone remind me why he left us back in 2018?
Was it his choice? Or did we bin him off?
I seem to remember that we was quite a good lineout operator
during his final season with us.
But, I also remember that he used to run too upright when he
carried the ball and used to get turned over too easily.
I also seem to remember that Worcester fans hated him and called
him a dirty play/thug. Which I thought was very harsh criticism.

Quoting myself from last month: “Without wanting to be too
harsh, I think the main issue before was that Charlie was a
regular starter who probably should have been a squad player.
Bringing him back as a squad option would be perfectly fine.”
I’d also say he always suffered from being seen as ‘the one we
kept instead of Launchbury’, which was never an accurate or fair
assessment.
The Quins set up he left was very different to the Quins he is
joining and as a back up option in a position lacking depth and
experience, I think he’s a decent signing.
Gambling on a Championship prospect or a young player cut
elsewhere would be more risky IMO and let’s be honest, the same
people saying they’re underwhelmed by Matthews’ signing would
then have been saying ‘why are we taking a risk on this guy’.

Forgot to add. Really not sure about the ‘thug’ piece from
Worcester fans. Matthews wasn’t anything of the sort. If
anything, I always thought he needed way more of a mean streak.

Worcs fans are always fun.
It's a decent bit of business, an experienced player that the
coaches know well, a big unit, probably not too expensive and
fills a gap where we were looking a little light on numbers.
Fair enough.

The Worcs thing was he collided one of their players in a game
away at Sixways back in Jan 2016. The ref and TMO didn't think
it was harsh enough for anything more than a Penalty (can't even
remember if he even got penalised tbh), but the Worcs fans were
baying for blood, claiming it should've been a Red Card and a
lengthy ban. Their player (Heathcote) went off injured, but
Charlie played the full 80 & was getting grief from the home
faithful...

It's not as if his name is on the tip of my tongue, I flat out
don't recognise him!
