Quinky, just think how hard it is to get girls doing rugby at

The major issue for Rugby in schools is that PE is always run by
school year group. While that is okay for a sport like football,
cricket, hockey, etc, it doesn't suit a game like Rugby where
children who are developing at different rates physically are
pitched against each other based purely on what year they were
in rather than by weight/size criteria.

I know that's how they do it in NZ but I don't recall it being
much of an issue 50 years ago here.

Agree Camquin. I've got two daughters, same age, at different
independent schools. One, there is a structure for the girls and
teams from year 7 up. At the other, the girls had to start their
own team but did then get support from the school with coaching
and will start playing matches from September. Ironically, Eddie
went to their school earlier in the year and worked with them
and the first XV. He praised the school system hen, especially
with regards to transformational bursaries which give the Kyle
Sincklers and Ugo Monye's a chance to improve their games at
school boy level.
Going back to my own experience, ,I was at a state comprehensive
in gods own county of Essex and we did have Rugby and two good
rugby masters plus an annoying welsh tw*t who was living in a
JPR Williams dream land when England were wining everything.
Anyway, all the schools around us played and it was a good
standard and we all aligned to Barking Rugby Club. I believe the
school has maintained it's Rugby ethos alongside wendyball but I
imagine all the boys (and probably parents) want to be
footballers to make lot's of mullah so pressure on the schools
to promote it.
A sensible approach would be to set up, let's call it, the Danny
Care Rugby Academy at 10 of the poorest schools in Surrey/Sussex
and have excellent coaches and encourage students to want to go
there and play rugby. Link it to academic performance of course
and then see the standard improve. You could also do that with
Cricket and Hockey and you will see improvement in standards. A
win win but would need private investment. If only one had the
dosh!

Pretty pathetic deflection really from Jones.
Some clubs and coaches "empower" [hate that word] players to
think for themselves, react to what they see in front of them on
the pitch and to play [another cliché incoming] "heads-up
rugby". Other coaches clearly want to impose their structure and
don't like to see players deviating from it at all or thinking
for themselves.
Jones strikes me very much as the latter. It is noticeable
watching his England team that if they struggle in the first
half, they can turn it round second half when he's told the
players what to do. If the problems arise in the second half,
his players don't know how to solve it themselves. He has to
shoulder the blame for that for dropping anyone who disagrees
with him or doesn't stick rigidly to his pre-set plan.
Classic example was England vs France in consecutive years. One
year we kept kicking in behind them and scored loads of points
from it. Next year we did the same and it wasn't working. No-one
on the pitch knew what else to do though, as they'd clearly been
told to always kick in certain situations. A well-coached player
would have the confidence to look up and take a better option.
Whether the players have an easy life at school is frankly
irrelevant. I'm not sure someone from a state school who's had a
tough childhood is necessarily going to be any better at dealing
with a suffocating rush defence or massive Springbok pack than
someone who's at a £10k a term school

Although in touch rugby, neither size nor gender would be an
issue.
My own experience was at my grammar school. At age 15 (for some)
we were pitched in with the sixth form whose ages ranged from 16
through to 19. It was a steep and tough learning curve, but a
fantstic one too.

Sorry Brown Bottle that was true so last century but NZ has
moved on. Although rugby is still a dominate sport in schools
(especially girls schools where rugby is challenging netball &
hockey).
Take my old high school as a case example - boys school 600 in
my time now 750-800
It was was compulsory to play rugby the first 2 years. There was
something like 20plus teams &just 2 football teams (a junior &
senior) - and the First XV was crap. Nowadays there is about
8-10 teams, dramatic increase in football teams and new sports
like hockey & others. The result is the XV is very good, the
football gets great results and most importantly there is no
compulsory policy to pay rugby and teenagers get to play the
sport they want.

Yeah, ok, but I was just referring to the grouping by size
rather than age.
