Aylsford Bulls Ladies were champions in 2017 the season before
the Premier15s started.

AdrianB you’re right, Richmond won it the year before. The
Premiership 15s started in 2017 but it’s 17/18 and I’d forgotten
16/17.
BB I’m not sure what you mean by “playing in a league four
levels from the top”. Who?

I believe the link between Quins and Aylesford was already there
when Bulls won the title. If I remember correctly, the launch of
a women's team was part of the 150th plans.

favourites to lift the trophy.

My memory was that there was already a Quins womens team. The
team was okay - but, not challenging for silverware.
But, Aylesford were really successful.
So, somebody at Quins decided that it would be easier to form a
partnership with Aylesford. They sent coaches there other
support and as a result, Aylesford were even better.
Then they went the whole hog and made Aylesford the new Quins
womens team at the expense of the existing team.
Over the next period, they lured players from Richmond - which
basically spelt the end for Richmond's aspirations to stay at
the top table.
IMHO - it isn't one of our finest hours. We hurt the original
Quins Womens team, Aylesford and Richmond all in the name of
buying success.

That last link you posted Yareet is evidence of how I remembered
things. Richmond really we’re the last team to win the
Premiership and then lost most of their players and coaches to
Quins.
Quins had to find a team to take over at the top to avoid
many seasons of promotions which would have held them back from
getting into the first Premiership 15 league. A bit ruthless but
maybe the end result has been worth it.

As far as I'm aware, there has only been one Harlequins Ladies
team prior to the Aylesford link up. They latterly played out of
Old Isleworthians.
As part of the 150th legacy, the club wanted to have a focus on
women's and girls' rugby and around this time the link with
Aylesford was made. Whether there were conversations with other
clubs or if there was an eye on the upcoming Prem 15s I don't
know.
At the same time, there was significant effort made to build
girls' teams at the Amateurs with support from the pros.
Once Aylesford's team was re-branded as Harlequin Ladies, the
existing Ladies team became the 3rd XV (still at Old Is).
However, they have since come under the umbrella of the
Amateurs.

Quins Ladies. They were playing in National 2 South East league.
The 4 levels but might not be accurate but then it doesn't sound
like the 2nd tier to me. 😁
Never sleep's summary is good.

Now I understand what you meant BB, I was unaware that they had
anything more than a social team but I do remember them playing
at Sutton and Epsom after the newly formed U13s & 15s girls had
their first ever games. They were awful as I remember (the women
not the girls) . The youngsters did extremely well against a
well established girls section at S&E.
That’s a pretty good summary by never sleep I totally
agree with.

Good news. Let's hope somewhere during the season they manage to
put themselves on a more secure financial footing.
