I always think that Eddie has this blinding arrogance that he
can see what's great or poor about a player more than anyone
else and likes to lord that over people.
I don't disagree that sometime March does not stand out in games
if Esterhuizen, Smith, Lynagh and Green are tearing through the
oppo but England's problem isn't just in attack, they give up so
much territory off 1-5 phases and that's where March excels.
I'd pick him for his defence and aerial power and his attack is
just a bonus. Manu, I honestly can't remember back to back
England performances where he has been the standout. Move on.

       > I'm wondering if it has finally dawned on Eddie that he
doesn't have much time to build squad depth before next year's
RWC. Maybe March has already convinced Eddie that he will do the
job - so he's trying out Porter now. Which might also explain
chances being given to Freeman, Heyes, JVP, Joseph, Arundell...
There will be injuries between now and RWC so each of the above
have chances to crowbar their way into the England RWC squad if
the wind blows their way, or be on standby should initial squad
players get injured during the tournament - I just wish Eddie
had initiated them earlier. It's not like the entire English
game hasn't been calling for England selectors to cast their
nets wider for the last, what, couple of decades?
       >
       > That's the optimistic take on March being hooked.
       >
       > Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if Eddie has randomly
decided to just scapegoat March for no real reason other than
collective deficiencies - e.g. it does feel highly probably that
he might be taking the fall for a general lack of ballast in the
England backline. I wonder, for instance: if Manu had been the
fit 12 for this tour and Faz had been injured, would March have
been dropped? Irony being (in my mind at least) that Porter,
pound-for-pound, doesn't actually offer much more with ball in
hand through traffic - but has perhaps been parachuted in on a
perception that he will give England a little more of that
       wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am.
       >
       > I do have to concede that I think March operates sooo much
better with a Manu/Esterhuizen as a natural foil inside. We all
trust him implicitly to make his tackles and play a significant
(usually leading) role in defence, but the only weakness in his
game I could entertain is a possible tendency to go missing in
attack on occasion without a running threat inside him to turn
the defending 13's shoulder in for a second before releasing his
pace through a bit of space. Farrell isn't going to be that guy
       - which, to me, represents a far more fundamental issue for
England than who gets the 13 shirt...

For me, your last paragraph outlines my understanding of exactly
why Marchant isn’t playing - or at least isn’t playing centre.
He is brilliant within the Quins structure of a big 12 and a
glider at 13. But that’s clearly not how Eddie wants to play. He
has hung his hat on playmakers at 10 and 12 so he wants the unit
       at 13.
Ideally that would be somebody proven by Manu is unreliable and
Atkinson was pants against the BaaBaas.
All of the talk before Saturday was of Porter being the one to
       make holes. I’m
not 100% sure it worked as everyone
hoped but so far he has only had one opportunity to show what he
       can do.
Ironically, the best way to get Marchant in the XV may be to
play a bosher at 12 which could be to Smith’s detriment.

carried the ball all of three times. The sort of performance
Marchant would get punted from the squad for.

I've seen various people saying porter played well. Utterly
baffling. He was unnoticeable all game except for the missed
       tackles. Utterly dreadful.
Joe should be starting, Danny shouldn't.

I think DC is starting to help Marcus who still does not seem to
have found his feet on the international stage.

Mostly on the Tigers board! I saw the words "Quietly effective"
       being mentioned. Bizarre
The ONLY thing I can think of, is EJ has a list of players who
he knows will be at the WC and be able to do a job, so is purely
looking at who can step up in the international arena incase
there is injuries. I think after tomorrow we will know if Porter
is likely to take to internationals or not, so far, i will wager
he isn't going to get more than a handful of caps.

Porter offers something different to Marchant, in that he's more
of a hard running threat, whereas Marchant will try to get on
the outside of defenders. Clearly Eddie Jones decided after the
first test that beating Australia would require even just the
threat of Porter to keep defenses honest, regardless of if he
gets the ball or not. I have no doubts that we'll see Marchant
back in an England shirt again, he's just a different type of 13
to Porter, and since Australia like to try and force you towards
the touchlines anyway, I can see why having Porter over Marchant
       would work better.

He did pretty well against the World champions in Nov and
started okay against Scotland in the 6N until Jones hauled him
off, and, bar the odd flash, hasn't looked the same for England
since. Almost as if when he's running the show without the
handbrake inside him and England play to his strengths, he can
       show his true self.

       Hard running 13 wanted?
Luke Northmore - lightyears ahead of Porter.

and you call us Tigers fans one eyed, apart from you two,
everyone else had him down as having contributed to shutting
down the middle of the field and keeping Australia limited for
       space.
