I'm wondering what Joe has done wrong to be so completely
dropped. Porter was fine but not noticeably better, I thought

With Eddie's penchant for a kicking game, Joe makes perfect
sense, hence Eddie does the opposite.

For those who haven't seen it yet:
1) Genge
2) George
3) Stuart
4) Chessum
5) Hill
6) Lawes
7) Ludlam
8 ) B. Vunipola
9) Care
10) Smith
11) Freeman
12) Farrell
13) Porter
14) Nowell
15) Steward
16) Cowan-Dickie
17) M. Vunipola
18) Heyes
19) Isiekwe
20) Willis
21) van Poortvliet
22) Joseph
23) Arundell
No huge surprises given the injuries.
Chopping and changing the 9s after good performances on both
their starts is odd.
Still can't believe there's no place for Marchant.

I thought Porter was good to be fair, and gives something quite
different to Joe so I have no issues with him starting. But Will
Joseph ahead of Marchant I can't get my head around - he's a big
talent but has barely even played in the Prem, yet is seemingly
ahead of Marchant and Dingwall at the moment

Would of preferred Arundell to start over Freeman. Our back 3
feels far too defensive and for all Nowell's running his tries
scored ratio for a winger for games played for england this year
is no where near good enough.
I'm not saying Freeman is a bad player, but it's a fairly one
dimensional back 3. I would of preferred Willis to start also. I
think Ludlam has actually played well for his recent
appearances, but to me appears a better impact player.
I think after his great starting debut, its harsh on Jack to
drop him, as I was impressed with how he controlled the game for
the first 60.

Porter was hopeless. Far too slow, never alive to opportunities,
missed a hatful of tackles (4 missed from 9 attempts!), lost the
ball a few times, made no passes and carried the ball all of
three times. The sort of performance Marchant would get punted
from the squad for.

Yes I couldn't agree more. For all the acclaim he's received for
his club form, I thought Porter was completely anonymous last
Saturday. Marchant was far more influential the week before and
didn't have a bad game. Eddie's selection policy continues to
puzzle

I'm wondering if it has finally dawned on Eddie that he doesn't
have much time to build squad depth before next year's RWC.
Maybe March has already convinced Eddie that he will do the job
- so he's trying out Porter now. Which might also explain
chances being given to Freeman, Heyes, JVP, Joseph, Arundell...
There will be injuries between now and RWC so each of the above
have chances to crowbar their way into the England RWC squad if
the wind blows their way, or be on standby should initial squad
players get injured during the tournament - I just wish Eddie
had initiated them earlier. It's not like the entire English
game hasn't been calling for England selectors to cast their
nets wider for the last, what, couple of decades?
That's the optimistic take on March being hooked.
Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if Eddie has randomly
decided to just scapegoat March for no real reason other than
collective deficiencies - e.g. it does feel highly probably that
he might be taking the fall for a general lack of ballast in the
England backline. I wonder, for instance: if Manu had been the
fit 12 for this tour and Faz had been injured, would March have
been dropped? Irony being (in my mind at least) that Porter,
pound-for-pound, doesn't actually offer much more with ball in
hand through traffic - but has perhaps been parachuted in on a
perception that he will give England a little more of that
wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am.
I do have to concede that I think March operates sooo much
better with a Manu/Esterhuizen as a natural foil inside. We all
trust him implicitly to make his tackles and play a significant
(usually leading) role in defence, but the only weakness in his
game I could entertain is a possible tendency to go missing in
attack on occasion without a running threat inside him to turn
the defending 13's shoulder in for a second before releasing his
pace through a bit of space. Farrell isn't going to be that guy
- which, to me, represents a far more fundamental issue for
England than who gets the 13 shirt...
