Stewart, Nowell, Farrell & most of the forwards had good
games.....rest....forget it!

Just got back to the hotel after the game. One thing I thought
was that we didn't really compete hard on their lineouts. Our
jumpers never got the the same height as their receivers.
Defensively we seemed stronger & competed harder (or maybe
smarter) than last week. Australia's injuries could be more
consequential for the decider next week.
As for the ground itself, a nice proper Rugby stadium (rather
than an Oval as Optus was). Wasn't a full crowd (I guess
there'll be more there tomorrow for the SoO decider). The walk
from the centre of town felt a bit like the walk to the Big
Stoop in that the roads were closed off. Decent sightlines even
in the corners as I was. I know we complain about the people
coming & going during games, but they're just as bad over here
in Oz!

This England side is slowly figuring it out. You won't see them
run in tries the Quins way. The Strength is in their pack,
lineout set piece, kicking game, back three who are great under
the high ball, and in having two players who can keep control of
the territory game in Smith and Farrell. It isn't the same as
Quins' strengths where everyone can play the ball and we go
lightning quick. Eddie's england have always been about power
and they got back to what they do well today. They're much more
like Saracens or Leicester than they are what we are used to
(and spoiled with).
A lot of negativity in this thread and while some of it is
founded, most of it is hyperbolic. Not a lot of teams go into
Suncorp and win (no one has since 2016, when an Eddie Jones
England team went in and beat them and they've played all the
big names there including SA, NZ and France twice last year) and
this experimental England side just did. The first five minutes
were absolutely exceptional. Multiphase attack leading to
pushing them over off a split drive. We then crushed the life
out of them for 30 mins and deserved to be 19-0 up. Stuart got
hosed for the scrum pen that got them in position to make it
19-7 at the break and aus were lucky to be that close. Best half
we've put together since SA at Twickenham last year, without
question.
We lost a bit of direction and control in the tight when Maro
went off. He's so important to us, and Chessum was a massive
downgrade (not his fault - Maro is just world class). That 20
mins between that period and Marcus' (very silly) yellow and sin
bin spell was when they did basically all their damage, at which
point we brought Care on for the (initially excellent, but
fading) Van Poortvliet and brought Ludlam on for Underhill and
then completely reasserted control.
Thought that Lawes and Hill were excellent. Hill would have shut
a lot of people up after playing the fool last week. He was
excellent, a complete nuisance in the loose and aggressive in
the tight. Lawes had his best game for a while. We look a better
side with Billy at 8 and I think (sadly for dombrandt) that
eddies sides generally do better with a ball carrying option at
8 rather than someone as dynamic as Dombrandt. I suspect we may
end up going back in that direction for the RWC. Marcus was poor
by his standards (especially kicking, and he does pick up the
odd yellow because of how he plays in defence) but is doing far
more unseen stuff than he does for and I saw enough today to
make me think that he and farrell can work together. We're
going to see them again next week, and hopefully it clicks.
There were a couple of moments in both halves where he threw the
shackles off, but we couldn't quite execute.
Porter and Van Poortvliet (in particular) look like good finds.
How JVP is Leicester's third choice nine is beyond me. Don't
think Freeman's quite there, looks too slow at that level and
doesn't look like he has the all court game to become a player
like Nowell. I'd prefer Marchant there next week, unless they
unleash Arundell from minute 1.
Having seen 160 mins of rugby, I'm quietly confident of a win
next week, and think it'll be the week where the attack finally
clicks and we play a decent 80 min game. Only question marks are
if Maro can't go due to concussion, and what the backline looks
like. Think Porter keeps his place, but we may see May or
Marchant back on the wing.

Borthwick is building a side and building a lot of young players
careers, slow and purposely, players like JvP, are getting their
go, along with Chessum, Martin Hayes etc, they will be replacing
the old guard when the tactics and the time are right. Once
Jones has gone, you may well see a lot of the younger players,
but I doubt Skippy will pick any of them for the last test, he
will drop all the best players, can't have his home side being
beaten.

In general, this is correct. However, England often run the
slide pattern off lineouts, which involves the 13 running a hard
line off 10, with the intention of getting all three members of
your back 3 attacking the 15m channel on the other side of the
pitch to the lineout. If your 13 can run a more threatening
dummy line (which, no disrespect at all to Marchant, Porter is
better at) then you can suck in more defenders, which creates
more time and space to get the ball to your wingers.
Unfortunately I don't have Sky and wasn't able to get a stream
working to watch the game, so I can't comment on how that worked
out in practice, but that's the theory of it.

It was win at all costs today, do what was right and keep
reloading the defence. I'll take an ugly one but it in no way
solves the problem that we seem to be stuck between two stools
of thought.
We didn't win because Danny, March & Cocka didn't play/start we
won because the forwards were much better than last week. Its
easier to play behind a dominant pack. The oppo are always going
to have a 20 minute spell when they're dominant and that's what
we saw today between half time and 60 minutes.
It's dull, boring but again, today was about winning. On to
Sydney and just go for it.

Honestly I think some of the criticism of Marcus by our own on
here is a little unjustified. Apart from a couple of misguided
kicks out of hand and a yellow card for a knock on (which we see
most games from at least one player preventing a probable try
scoring opportunity) I thought he managed the game well. He
stood flat creating good offloads for other players and given
that he's only permitted to display half his abilities for
England (Farrell takes the goal kicks and touch kicks) I think
he acquitted himself quite well

Graeme from thedeadballarea made the point on Twitter that Smith
is still learning to kick as a plan, when he's used to just
kicking as a reaction. Now, I know that some on here are totally
opposed to players expanding their skillset while with England,
but with time and experience I have no doubts that Smith will
come to thrive with England.
