A pleasant aspiration but in the cold light of day we simply
don't have the budget and resources to compete at the business
end of this competition

You don't select from the whole population. How many
rugby-playing schools are there?

In Gauteng? About a gazillion. They start paying rugby at
primary school level.

Ones that will feed into the professional game.
I don't think the primary kids matter. What ages are they going
into the Guateng setup compared to the Leinster academy setup?

I don't really know.
But, when I was getting towards the end of high school some of
my mates were selected for the Transvaal (as it was called then)
age grade team.
Typically, the private schools and the Afrikaans speaking
schools had better teams and managed to get kids into the
provincial team.

According to Wikipedia - there are far more players in South
Africa than in Ireland.
Ireland Registered players
South Africa Registered players
The Provincial structure is shown on this page:
HTML https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_South_African_rugby_union_teams
There are 2 areas that are very strong. Basically Cape Town
(Western Province) and Pretoria (Blue Bulls). Together, they
have won 59 Currie Cups.
After that, you have Joburg (Lions), Durban (Sharks) and
Bloemfontein (Free State Cheetahs).
Other provinces have a smaller population and no major cites.

I never understand the point of using the "registered players"
stat.
Somebody turning out 8 years ago for the dog & duck Sunday pub
team doesn't have much impact on the national side.

Getting back to the original question, how feasible is it for us
to win it? I think with the sides around us, Northampton and
Gloucester have pretty settled squads and don't look to be
suffering from losing starters similar to us although at lock we
will be weaker by not having Symo/Tizz there.
If you look at the Leinster model where their big stars only
really play in this tournament, internationals and against
Munster will we be prepared to rest our better players and let
the David's, Beard's & Musk's carry the load in league games
when the first choices are actually available? If yes then we
have a good crack at it but would we as fans accept not seeing
Marcus, Dommers et al for an extra 3 or 4 games on top of the
international absences?
I don't think we would but of course if the others are still
winning playing the Quins way then who knows.

For understandable reasons, our squad is weaker overall than it
was two seasons ago. I don’t get the sense we have any one
incoming and so all eyes on the coaching team to turn our
youngsters into Prem quality. Really hope they do it. Just
remembering that the season after we won the Prem last time, we
got in the Playoffs the following season didn’t we? Then sank
back into mid-table for a decade. Hope I’m wrong 🤞

It is good that we didn't have to face any of the in form French
teams this year.
(I am currently watching the Too 14 final)
