Anyone who goes to a match at HQ gets to see the worst part of
the drinking and rugby (as you stand for the umpteenth time to
let someone pass with 4 beers in a cardboard carrier). You
wonder if these people can even see the game, let alone follow
it in 15 minute slices.
However that's not my experience of being at the Stoop. Of
course people get up for a drink or a pee, but it's not
constant.

With respect, DOK, that’s but the worst part of drinking and
rugby. Watching a game at the Millennium when Wales beat England
but the locals will still fighting each other in the stands was
significantly worse.

The Uni bit is something of an oddity to me. Is it some sort of
Lord of the Flies thing brought in from the private boarding
school side?
I was State school educated in an all boys' school, and such
stupid initiation ritual type stuff as there was invariably only
happened on school trips where you had a bunch of lads in
communal accommodation being "supervised" from the bar by a
small number of teachers. I could imagine that environment
being more of a general part of life in boarding schools and
maybe coming from there?
My son currently plays U16 rugby, and his team is thriving. We
have around 50 boys turning up regularly on a Sunday, the
majority of whom have been there since primary school, with
another sizeable injection in Y7 when boys who turned up to play
for his local (State comprehensive) school who weren't already
at a club joined in reasonable numbers. As such, they've all
been together since way before any of them would've thought of
drinking, so who are they going to initiate and why?
If he heads off to Uni, gets hammered a few times and becomes
lifelong enemies with whatever drink he first projectile vomits
out of his nostrils that's all well and good, but if things got
to extremes that robbed him (and the vast majority of his team
mates) of his current wonderful passion for the game, I'd be
absolutely devastated.
