OK, but the overall point is that the game is shrinking not
growing so if there are potential barriers to participation that
can be removed, it makes sense to at least consider them. A lot
of it is perception. I don’t think there’s that many people who
are turned off of rugby because they think you have to drink to
play, but I get why people might have that impression.
OTOH, do I think the communities Ugo was referring to are an
untapped reservoir of rugby players … probably not.

Has anybody actually established an association between the
alcohol-drinking element of rugby "culture" and the game
shrinking or being unpalatable to many young people? Even if a
person does not wish to drink alcohol, that would not prove that
this was the element turning them off rugby. Many scenarios in
human life include an alcohol-drinking element, e.g., drinking
after work, cricket matches (which have a different
demographic), university social life has its moments, football
fans sometimes drink a lot and make mischief etc. Is the problem
well enough understood to allow Monye and others to start fixing
it?

Well despite going to a boarding school in the 80s, I didn’t
play club or Uni rugby because I didn’t want to have to drink
pints of vomit, be made to drink beer out of someone’s bottom,
generally be ok with hazing/humiliation etc.
It all strikes me as a very dodgy legacy of the kind of confused
public school boy culture that is still sadly at the heart of
rugby.
Why can’t you just drink a lot and play rugby?
What’s with the repressed humiliation stuff?
Genuine question - why? Coz if the answer is “team bonding” then
why is it only in rugby?

Not sure there's been any scientific studies but anecdotal
evidence is not in short supply.

Ugos gone all woke. Virtue signalling click bait at its finest.
If people want to play and excel at Rugby they will. If/when
they get some silverware or glory, everyone can celebrate how
they see fit. Alcohol or no alcohol. Everyone is entitled to
celebrate The way they want to.
A man who owns a bar in Twickenham doesn’t really have a leg to
stand on in the stakes. Legend but needs to wind his neck in

I’m pretty sure sure cricket is just as bad. It was at boarding
school (like you, an 80’s veteran), university and then at
plenty of local clubs I played for in the 1990’s and 2000’s.
At prep school (when we definitely too young to blag booze from
a beer off), on the bus ride back some unlucky chap got a ‘Dr
Death.’ I’ll leave that to your imagination!

Utterly crass post. Just demonstrates why the problem exists.
Also, woke is a good thing - if you actually understand its
meaning and derivation.

I played rugby all the way through school to a pretty decent
standard and would’ve carried on playing at uni were it not for
the ludicrous initiations nonsense and the weird stuff involving
various challenges and forfeits that were just plain disgusting.
The you need to do this to be part of the team stuff is
certainly off putting in my opinion.
I’m not anti having a drink by any means. I’ll have plenty of
days on the beers this year at the cricket and at the autumn
internationals but can see what Ugo means.

The only thing that put me off at uni was the fear of getting
broken by the massive blokes who also played! I played through
school ages and never experienced any weird initiation stuff
🤷‍♂️
Plenty of drinking though.....

I played for 20 odd years and the only initiation was for a Uni
first team which was drinking some beer, which I would have done
anyway.
Initiations or hazing to give it an American term certainly
isn't confined to rugby a lot of sports both male and female
have it and it is a big feature of some American University
Fraternities or Sororities, so not just a rugby thing.
