He’s got a point. At the final last summer I was sitting just
below the TV pundits. Towards the end, as Quins closed in on
victory, despite being on the job one of the pundits was
enjoying a pint and waving to the adoring and well-oiled throng
below who were chanting his name. If only Ugo could have been
there to admonish everyone!

I think there are danger zones all over this topic, for many
reasons and probably some posters (like me) are reluctant to
enter said danger zones. So.........drinking not good for you as
a hole, consider reducing it at matches as a personal
responsibility.

Saracens had an excellent method for stopping you drinking too
much on the day...ridiculously long queues! [emoji3]
I had one pint of cider and that was it!

Trying to appeal to communities who have a different view on
alcohol, and no real interest in rugby. And may have a different
view on our Pride game.....
Quite amusing seeing some of the self-appointed rugby twitter
experts like Squidge falling over themselves to agree with him
and say how nasty it all is. If you sit in your bedroom all day
on youtube then no, the clubhouse might not be the place for you

Squidge has made one short tweet about it saying that it was one
reason he quit playing (and is also self deprecating about his
lack of skill), which given he's talking about personal
experience seems fair enough. Meanwhile there's plenty of people
replying to his tweet going "Yup, the laddish drinks and hazing
culture around rugby stopped me enjoying it"

I'm not so sure having read the threads on here about the Pride
game - might fit in perfectly!
But being serious, this isn't about having a few pints in the
clubhouse. Grassroots rugby is bleeding players and I do think
that the initiation/drinking culture is an issue here. When I
went to university from a pretty decent rugby school (few
ex-Quins), most people I know stopped playing and many cited the
university rugby culture as a big part of that.
That was a good few years ago, and I only know one of them
that's picked rugby back up since graduating. Sure it's probably
not impacting the professional game too much as most pros are in
the academy long before they can drink.

I think also that the generation coming through now, 15-20,
aren't as bothered about drink as we were as we've demystified
alcohol for them by letting them have some with meals or on
holidays and they see slightly older ones focussing on their
fitness more and more. So like most of the current challenges,
it will naturally eradicate itself in 20 or so years.
