Farewell Symonds & Tizard and the future
DIR By: Twickersman

Well that was a bit of a damp squib.
Thank you to Symonds for all his years of service, he has been
immense in the past few seasons. Enjoy your retirement.
Tizard, what a shame he is leaving. I would like to wish him
good luck, but considering the club he is going to, I can't
bring myself to it.
Hammond, Lewies etc...have a lot to live up to next season.
Hopefully Kenningham can come back to full fitness and allow the
second rows to play lock and he can nail down the no 6 jersey.

Symons has been a fantastic servant for the club. Durable, tough
and incredibly consistent. Hopefully Irne Herbst fills his
shoes.
Joe Gray also retiring, so we're losing a lot of experience
there too. Be interesting to see Riley and Musk battling it out
for his shirt.
Still lots to look forward to next season with the return of
Kenningham and Lamb, plus Evans should be back to his best with
a full pre-season under his belt.
It'll be interesting if Gjaltema gets more game time next year.
If he is seen as DC's successor then surely next year will be
the transition season and we'll see them sharing the 9 jersey.
Expecting to see a lot more of the youngsters next year as
international call ups bite. Very interested to see how we cope
when Esterhuizen is away with SA.

I hope Lewies comes back refreshed after a proper holiday and
pre season, as needing to play him hasn't helped us in the
crunch part of the season. Otherwise we're looking a little
under resourced there, especially when you compare us to, say,
Saracens stocks.
Looking forward to Dino Lamb coming back and reminding us of how
good he'd suddenly become prior to his injury!

Yep we are short on quality at lock, on current standing. I hope
Herbst works out but have to say I’m underwhelmed, Dino should
come back for and raring to go. Lewies sadly is very prone to
injury and the others still developing.

Realise the salary cap plays a part but our squad next season
(assuming no more signings) is considerably weaker than last
year and this. All for growing our own but today showed the gap
between us and the top 2. Need 2 or 3 seasoned pros signed
IMHO.

I think our squad compares well with Leicester's. I posted it on
the other thread but Saracens had 22 internationals in their 23,
and 599 tier 1 caps plus 26 Lions caps in the starting XV. For
comparison England had 511 in their starting XV against Ireland.
No one else has a side like that.

I wonder how they manage to keep such a squad under the cap? I
wonder…

Now that the salary cap has dropped it must be a lot more
difficult to command the really big pay cheques so players
figure they may as well stay with the club, especially as they
are pretty likely to win things as well. The ongoing benefits of
spending over the cap.

Right - there's no way to know, but either players are being
paid well under market value or there's external payments
continuing to happen, either way players would struggle to find
new clubs at their market value

I agree in part, but I have high hopes for Lamb and Hammond.
Let’s give Herbst the benefit of the doubt. As I’ve said before,
the main things we need to replace are Symons’ disruptive
ability at the maul in particular and his heft/graft. Some of
that will be hard to replace, but if Herbst can bring strong
basics, physicality and work rate, that will get us most of the
way there.
I assume there is still hope the gamble on CSW will pay off. I
would have hoped/expected to see him sooner, but if he’s injury
free and has a proper preseason, it’ll be like another new
signing.
While our squad looks a little light in some areas, we have a
lot of good players who will be available all year round (injury
permitting). Players like WEv and Lawday are what we need to be
there or thereabouts, not big names we rarely see.
