Thankfully, we’ve been pretty savvy at picking up players who
are very good but just outside of the international picture -
WEv being a prime example - and also have a very good crop of
academy products to call upon.
Obviously, we’re much better with our test players, but I think
we’ll be better equipped to handle it than a lot of clubs will
be.
TBH, that’s why I’m usually hesitant when we’re linked with
England players.

From a glass half full perspective it should mean more game time
for emerging young talent across the board. Marcus certainly got
his chance a lot sooner than he would have due to injury
circumstances.

Sadly, this is how it will be from now on. Like Leinster 'stars'
we'll only see Smith, Dommers & the two Joes for about 40% of
games or more realistically reduced minutes in what will be
tagged as 'lesser' games giving the perception that they play in
60% games when in minutes we'll be lucky if they play more than
50 per game.
That is much harder to maintain in the Prem as there are no easy
games but if it keeps the Academy's turning over the next
Smiths, Dommers & Joes then great.

It’s more annoying when players get called up but not used and
not released back.

Not much different to most seasons, this has pretty much been
the norm for many years...The quote about "clubs are obliged to
produce international players" say it all....
Having just watched the conclusion of the Rugby Pacific League
(Forgive Me if I got the name wrong), the SH seem to have a much
better scheduling of domestic/International matches, they run
their season outside of the international windows so no loss of
players, they play less games too, and (again correct Me if I'm
wrong) there is no equivalent of the Heineken Cup, so its a
win-win for SH teams, less games, fresh international
players....
It's no surprise that the SH have all but 1 world cup

The NZ season structure is a very good one, with feeder clubs
feeding up into Super Rugby, followed by the International
season. But the RFU missed its chance to do something similar
when it let the clubs organise a pro league without it.
One solution would be to shift the season around so that it’s
more bookended by the international season. The trouble with
that is that it’s hard to move the AI and summer tour windows,
because those fit the SH schedule nicely. The moveable feast is
the 6N, but the powers that be are loath to shift that because
it “owns” a slot in the tv schedules that no other sport really
occupies. From a playing perspective, it would be much better
done after the Prem season and before the summer tours, or even
at the start of the season building up to the AIs (and then move
into a regular club season).
The other tricky bit is that we need to cut down on player
attrition by reducing their game time, but the clubs still want
their stars on show and to make money.
In an alternative universe where the RFU hadn’t spaffed its RWC
2015 cash on a very nice but underutilised hospitality suite
(and COVID hadn’t happened), another (and to my mind superior)
option would be to shift the Prem into a conference system to
reduce the number of games, and invest heavily in promoting
women’s rugby to fill the gap in club schedules. It would need a
few years of subsidising the clubs to grow the game, but that to
me would be a worthwhile investment from the RFU if it meant
they got a bigger say in the season and established women’s
rugby as an integral part of the season.
But sadly, we don’t live in that universe.

And now Tommy has been called up too.

Two things.
Firstly , the RFU messed up 20 years earlier than 2015 when they
didn’t take control, leaving it to the clubs. That’s why England
and France have so many World Cup successes.
Secondly, I seriously can’t see what women’s rugby can
contribute.

Two things
Firstly, I made that point in the first paragraph of my post
Secondly, if you really can’t see any value in women’s rugby,
then I feel sorry for you because the likelihood is that it will
take up a growing share of rugby coverage.
