I think that the stepped approach LD describes makes sense - no
point in over exposing the club to more debt, as the other
article, linked in the one DOK posted describes, just do it in
stages and see how organically the club grows and also maintains
the support.

Sorry my memory is rubbish but I know there have been several
articles before about the break even point of using big Stoop,
especially as the RFU are also trying to recoup monies following
the pandemic. Not sure if 47k fans covers that break even point?
It was great to see so many families and had some really good
chats/banter with Glaws fans before, during and after and saw 6
out of 7 tries at our end of the ground.
Would still prefer just having Big Game over there and keeping
the rest at the Stoop but fully accept that we need to increase
revenue to meet the plans for growth.
Priorities?
1. Continue growth in the academy (more investment In home grown
talent and then higher paid superstars where needed, but only 3
or 4)
2. Brand on the pitch (don't let what we've built fall away)
3. Stadium expansion (don't think Rugby can sustain 'if you
build it they will come')
4. Brand off the pitch
5. Re-introduction of the cone of crackling (pig fat + hair =
Nirvana)

Interesting about the extra 2000 seats at the stoop in a couple
of years, I guess a new North Stand?
Could make it a two tier and keep the foot print almost the same
as the current stand, do seats up top and terrace down below,
bit like the speedy skips stand at Gloucester.

At the time of the original BG (way back in December 2008!) The
50k figure was mentioned as a "Break even", but I have a feeling
it is actually less than that. 50K is the capacity if the top
level is not used. Think of the number of other events over the
years that get far fewer than we had on Saturday but still
keep/kept coming back. The 7s this weekend will see Somewhere in
the 30k attendance each day, with the staffing at a similar
level for longer, but they still manage to do it year after
year.

There isn't necessarily one 'break even point'. The club may
have negotiated a deal with the RFU more beneficial to the club
than the annual BG fixture, possibly for using the Big stoop
twice per season instead of once or agreed a lower rate for not
filling it. The council website listed the expected crowd as 55k
when it 1st went up on their website months ago
There is precious little point speculating about whether the
club made more money or not as we're not privy to the figures

Picking up from various comments, I think 50k was right for the
early Big Games, when the RFU was sitting fairly pretty
financially and could afford to name its price.
The market has clearly shifted, and I suspect the RFU was
willing to cut a much more generous deal just to get the stadium
in use and start bringing revenue back through the door. Given
the numbers and ticket prices, it doesn't take much of a
reduction in the hire cost to make a big difference to how much
Quins take home from the match.

From memory the 50k limit from 2008 was due to the transport
situation ie limited trains as was bank holiday or semi bank
holiday for trains.

Yeah, that was certainly part of it. I think there was also an
element of the club being pragmatic about expectations. At that
time, no single club had taken a single regular season game to a
big stadium. There had been the LDH, but even that had only had
up to 52k in years prior to the Big Game happening. No-one knew
if we'd even be able to draw the 50k limit, let alone to go on
to have over 72k at every single edition of Big Game since.

"Breaking even" on the cost of hiring HQ and making as much
profit as using The Stoop are not necessarily the same thing...
