He last played for SA in August 2019, so three years will be up
this August and he can then switch providing he has a parent or
grandparent from the country he wishes to switch to.
I do not think it is possible to switch on the basis of
residency once you have played internationally and even if it
was the period is now 5 years not 3.

Well he's completed the 3 year stand down from international
rugby but he was born in SA so it depends on his
parents/grandparents.

As far as I know, Esterhuizen has no English
parents/grandparents, so he won't become eligible for England

I suspect the fact that he is an outstanding player in his
position and our coach is Eddie Jones might be more of an issue
for him!
