the incident on the GP site. Unfortunately pretty much
everything is out of shot so I can only go by hearing Carley
blowing the whistle and immediately then repeatedly calling "No.
9" etc. It doesn't show him showing Danny the card. Presumably
the BT footage had different angles.

I think so, yeah. Weird coincidence: My recording was a bit
messed up so that if I tried to fast forward to the point where
he shows the card, it skips a period of a few minutes. So I had
to watch the last three minutes in real time all over again! Did
get a photo of Carley in the process of putting his card back
into his pocket but wasn't quick enough to snap him a second
before, and any attempt to rewind went back minutes.
I did notice it didn't seem to be on the site - technical issue
or PR wanting to gloss over a sour end to a high profile game?

Calling DC back would have made sense if he'd explained why he
was giving the yellow card. But he called him back to offer a
red instead? Either he'd already communicated his reason, in
which case no need to call him back; or he hadn't, and never
       did, which is poor refereeing.

That isn't what happened. He only called DC back because DC
ignored him when he called him immediately after he blew the
whistle and then kept ignoring him. He mentioned the potential
red first while DC was still ignoring him because that's what
the red would have been for.

He called Danny back just to threaten him with a red and nothing
else. Because, well, that's what he did, and all he did. All he
says is "it's a yellow, we can upgrade it to a red if you want",
after Danny has done what he asked (stopped talking, come to see
       him).
I honestly agree with you that he probably wanted to make it
clear to Care that walking away from him was unacceptable.
But... he doesn't say that. He just chucks out a threat to a
player who is (finally) doing what he's been asked and who
cannot respond without risking a red.

Yeah, I think it took so long Carley just wanted it done with to
       be honest.
But I'd watch it (or listen) on the GP site - they may not have
the views (although I thought it was supposed to be the BT
broadcast) but it's clear Carley wanted to talk to DC
straightaway. He first mentions the "choice of cards" after DC's
ignored him at least 4 times. There's no way at that point he
was calling for the 9 just so he could offer him an upgrade to a
red or to point out that walking away was unacceptable.

Like I said, I have the TV broadcast recorded and if the GP site
doesn't have Carley showing the card then there's a bit of
editing in there. I do agree with you that he says a choice of
cards - he's talking to Lewies at that point. He then shows
Danny the yellow (presumably from a distance, we can't see where
Danny is), then calls him over again which Care eventually
responds to (I'd have to go through the whole rigamarole again
just to work out the timings on that!) only to be met with the
       threat.
What Carley said only makes sense if the insubordination is
still occurring, which it wasn't. He ended up being a guy trying
and failing to regain his authority with a peevish threat.

Peevish is a word that needs more regular use.

As I said in my original post - the commentator made the point
as soon as Danny started walking off without talking to Carley
that there was going to be a red card if he didn't stop. Carley
insisting on talking to Danny in fact saved him from a red. What
was Carley supposed to say at that point? Danny knew why he'd
got the yellow card, he didn't need to be told - but he did need
to go through the motions if talking to Carley before getting
off the pitch. His petulant refusal to talk to Carley was going
to get a red, and that's what Carley told him. I think we owe
Carley thanks for rescuing Danny from himself. The last thing we
need is Danny up before a discipline committee at this stage of
       the season.
That said, apart from when Thompson accused Wayne Barnes of
being a cheating ref, I've seen penalties given for back chat
but can't remember seeing yellow cards, at least not without a
prior warning (which may have happened we just didn't see it).
Certainly it smacks of Carley having it up to here with Danny,
so maybe it had been a thing during the game.

into account the fact that emotions run high with players, this
was an intense game. Players are carded week in and out and
leave the field without having to return to the ref for a
talking to. Wayne Barnes writes on his arm "Reset" before a game
as he knows that his emotions can determine his next call. I
don't think Carley has that ability, commentators call him
school masterly and to my mind he is more concerned with his own
authority than understanding players understandable but possibly
       wrong frustration.

I personally think refs should also show some respect to
everybody else on the pitch rather than I'm "Sir" so I deserve
       respect!
