By that standard, every single bit of criticism of a player or
official on this board is a personal slight.

That isn't what I said.
Look, you knew exactly what championes meant - you just
deflected it rather than address it.
The OP's post was childish and deliberately offensive, to Carley
at least. It was in no way just criticism.

People comment on the professional ability of players and
referees all the time on here. The OP isn't personal abuse,
calling his actions in a bizarre situation unprofessional and
saying he's thin-skinned - something not entirely out of the
blue - is about as milquetoast as criticism gets. I'll happily
call Danny's initial reaction unprofessional and we all know
there's a few thin-skinned players out there too - is that a
personal slight?
I accept that there's a vague suggestion of Carley not being on
the level rather than just not good enough, which I can't
condone but doesn't exactly accuse him of corruption, but
that's about it. The desperate clambering onto the moral high
horse on this thread is a bit silly.

My point in making this post was to ask if refs should take into
account the fact that emotions run high with players, this was
an intense game. Players are carded week in and out and leave
the field without having to return to the ref for a talking to.
Wayne Barnes writes on his arm "Reset" before a game as he knows
that his emotions can determine his next call. I don't think
Carley has that ability, commentators call him school masterly
and to my mind he is more concerned with his own authority than
understanding players understandable but possibly wrong
frustration.

I can understand both sides.
It’s understandable that Danny would be frustrated after losing
the game on a poor decision and being denied the chance to
salvage the situation from what probably felt like a perfectly
good counter-ruck (but I think there was a genuine infringement
earlier in the play).
But regardless of what he said to Carley, talking back to the
ref risks a card of some colour, and the ref is entitled to
explain his reasoning to the affected player.
I don’t think Carley handled the end of the game well - both the
penalty against Andre and the one against Luke were incorrectly
awarded as far as I can see (Andre was holding on - but Quins
were impeded from clearing out because the tackler was on the
wrong side), and had lost the confidence of the Quins players.
But that doesn’t excuse Danny’s response, and I think Carley was
actually quite generous in the number of chances he gave him to
rectify the situation.

Precisely - Care should have just kept his mouth closed. He's
never going to change the decision. But they both need to look
at how they handled the situation. Care might be near the end of
his career, but Carley isn't - and he'll ref Quins again, so
about time Quins learnt to play to his whistle...

Carley also didn't give a penalty to Saints for a fairly obvious
holding on penalty a little while after the Wallace one. I
genuinely think he'd lost control of things.

Sure. I don't remember you or others getting this upset at the
thousands of other times that people have complained that a ref
has got it in for us, mind.
