You can see Danny say something when the penalty is given to
Northampton.

commentator say he can't just run off the pitch, he needs to
talk to the referee or it's a red (I never knew that!).

if he wants.

because of the rules on issuing a yellow card and in fact he was
protecting Danny from making a big mistake by going off the
pitch without talking to the ref, which would have resulted in a
red.

I have the game recorded. He says "6, 9 has a choice" etc etc
and the camera switches to him saying "9" again and showing the
yellow card, with 79:54 on the clock. Then he calls him back.
And says "it's a yellow, we can upgrade it to a red if you
want".
What is Danny supposed to say to that? What is the point of it?
He calls him back not to show him the card, but just to say that
and nothing else. It's very strange.

Just watched it again and apologies, you are correct that Carley
had waved the yellow before Care goes off. However, my read (and
it is only my read as we don’t see Care as he receives the first
card) is that DC said something more at that point. He’s clearly
shaking his head as he runs off and he looks to be muttering.
That would explain Carley threatening a red.
Regardless, I thinks it’s fairly clear that Care had said
something when the penalty was first given. That’s a yellow in
today’s game.

I don't think the yellow is under question. It's the fact that a
player who's been given a yellow and is leaving the field, is
then called back to e told he's received a yellow, under threat
of receiving a red. It was a futile act by Carley and served no
purpose. If he was trying to stamp his authority, it was a fail,
especially with seconds of the game left.

There are a couple of things that are similar on this thread on
both Danny Care and the head injury substitution where what the
referees are playing to and the law states being different.
Under 9.28 Players must respect the authority of the referee.
They must not dispute the referee’s decisions. They must stop
playing immediately when the referee blows the whistle to stop
play.
Sanction: Penalty.
For repeated infringements
Repeated infringements
9.8 A team must not repeatedly commit the same offence.
9.9 A player must not repeatedly infringe the laws.
Sanction: Penalty.
9.10 When different players of the same team repeatedly commit
the same offence, the referee gives a general caution to the
team and if they then repeat the offence, the referee
temporarily suspends the guilty player(s).
Usually on back chat the first offence of back chat is to march
the players a further 10 yards - why didn't Carley do this?
If back chat is a straight yellow a) why doesn't the law say so
and b) there should be a lot more of them.
Barnes flow chart and condescending tone in describing it also
isn't backed up by the current laws.
It appears to be yet another example of "elite" referees using a
different set of laws to the rest of teh game and to make it
worse different referees doing things differently.
Remember "truck and trailer"? - Still illegal
Hookers must have both feet outside the field of play on
lineouts
Scrum put in - tried a few years back then ignored
Ruck
- A player must bind onto a team-mate or an opposition player.
The bind must precede or be simultaneous with contact with any
other part of the body.
- Players must endeavour to remain on their feet throughout the
ruck.
So this means the fast majority of "clear outs" are illegal as
there is no pre bind and certainly no intention of staying on
feet, off feet is occasionally called but never consistently
Before it is claimed this speeds the game up and cuts down on
penalties it doesn't as if the laws are obeyed the game is
quicker with more open contest, taking away "Hollywood Calls" by
the referee also improves things.
Can you imagine cricket if the Umpires at the MCG decided to
ignore LBW "to speed the game up" and that the law is a bit
complicated so it is better for the new spectator?

I don't have a problem with a yellow for back chat if it's
warranted. I just don't get what Carley is trying to achieve
with that chat. Had he given a lecture on his behaviour, told
him why he was risking a red? Great, more power to his elbow.
Told him he was a senior player and setting a bad example? Cool,
cool.
But instead he just calls him back to threaten him/bait him into
saying something more. Danny had obviously already shut up, been
shown the card, and was walking off by that point, so...

It was just another example of Carly being an utter Rodney....
I really, really dislike him as a ref.

What is evident is that our lot seem to fall foul of Carley
routinely - perhaps they should invite him round for a "session"
as they have Barnes.
What is clear is that inconsistencies in refereeing causes
players and supporters no end of grief and it is one of the
biggest problems facing rugby, along with long-term financing
and injuries.

Really? If someone questioned both your professional ability and
integrity you'd be fine, as long as they didn't call you
thin-skinned?

I was there and didn't think Danny disrespected him by running
off....was very childish of the ref to call him back like
that....Neither will be proud of how they responded in the heat
of battle!
