No need to explain your point, it was perfectly clear. Underdog
status is not only granted when the players think they don't
have a chance. The supporters, the media, pundits and perhaps
most importantly the opposition are generally aware of the
consensus of opinion. Betting odds, articles in the lead-up etc
- it's not exactly complicated. Underdog status removes pressure
and heaps it on the opposition, it can remove conservatism and
hesitancy in play, especially in a team like Quins. You don't
think coaches invoke underdog status to encourage their team?
"They are massive favourites lads, let's show everyone" or
"we're massive underdogs boys, might as well not have shown
up"...
Underdog status clearly benefitted us during the playoffs,
regardless of whether the team were confident they could win it.
Are you suggesting that we weren't underdogs at half time in the
Bristol game because Marler said they had identified how to beat
them?

Actually, yes I am.
It's pretty clear from what the players themselves have said
about the match that they went in at half time feeling that the
game was there for the taking. I'm labouring the point a little
because it's clear from what the players themselves have said
that they didn't see themselves as underdogs, either going into
the game or going in at half time, even 28-5 down.
It's one of the things that seems to be genuinely different
about this team compared to other teams. It isn't "pressure's
off, have a bash and see what happens", it seems to be much more
a genuine confidence that they can score what they need to score
to win, especially in the later stages of games. It's a bit
reminiscent of the McCaw era All Blacks, who had a similar knack
of coming back into the game with a late score.
Underdog status isn't a tangible thing. Fans and pundits can
call it all they like, but it can only affect how teams behave
if the players actually feel it. I haven't seen anything to
suggest that this team did and what they themselves have said
suggests the opposite.

Not taking sides here but it seems reasonable to me that players
might believe they're firm underdogs whilst also believing
they're perfectly good enough to win/can win/will win if they do
everything they know they're capable of.

Agreed. Also, being the underdog doesn’t mean you’re ‘not good
enough’, it’s often a reflection on your opposition. Based upon
last season as a whole, Bristol and Exeter were rightly
favourites, but our end of season form meant we were a serious
threat no-one could write off.

Oh my. so you ARE actually claiming that underdog status can
only benefit a side who doesn't think they have a chance. Surely
that's completely counter-intuitive, but hey-ho.

No, I’m not. That’s more or less the opposite of what I wrote.
I’m stating that a team can only benefit from underdog status if
they think of themselves as underdogs. And I don’t think last
season’s Quins saw themselves in that light to any appreciable
degree.
