I don't think it's so much for clubs with already established
events. We have HQ just across the road and now go there twice a
year. Sarries have their game at White Hart Lane. I think it'll
be more likely to see some kind of midlands double header at
Villa Park or something maybe?

So let's bring Premiership rugby to Yorkshire and have Newcastle
play Sale in Leeds for example. It's a great game especially as
the local Yorkshire crowd weren't upset by having to cheer any
Lancastrians in the Sale side (yes I know Sale is in Cheshire)
and they like South Africans anyway. The result is they decide
Premiership rugby is for them so they look at the fixture list
for the next game they can attend and find it's either a fifty
mile trip to Manchester or a hundred mile trip to Newcastle. So
they say sod that and forget about it. Meanwhile back at
Newcastle and Sale the local supporters are totally pissed off.
A perfect way to shoot yourself in the foot with both barrels.
It's a plan worthy of the ECB!

I wonder if the better bet might be for the Women's XVs to
travel a bit and build a wider support base, interleaved with
the occasional travelling men's game.

They already are playing at different venues throughout the 6
Nations (Welford Road is predicted to break the record set two
weeks ago at Kingsholm). The real driver would be to play mens
internationals at other venues. The last one I can remember was
in the 2015 World Cup. Before that, the last time I can find
that they played an England-based game outside of Twickenham
were two tests back in 1998 in World Cup Qualification that were
played in Huddersfield, one against Argentina & one against the
mighty Netherlands and the 2009 game against Argentina played at
Old Trafford. Even that doesn't really count as it was part of
the "tour to Argentina" but played here to allow ARFU to get
some extra cash.
Take the England games to big stadia in Newcastle, Manchester,
Birmingham, etc, and you'll be guaranteed to draw far more fans
than you would taking a club game to the same venues.

The RFU is aiming to sell out Twickenham when they host the 2025
WRWC - but I was thinking more about the Premier 15s. They need
to build a bit of a supporter base, and in areas of the country
where there isn't a Premiership men's club, it might be easier
to get traction if there was a willingness to invest over a
number of seasons.

Didn't England play at St James' Park against Italy as a warm up
for WC2019? Marchant scored that day if I remember rightly! But
yes, it's rare for England to play outside London these days.

Let's be honest the RFU have stadium that they can fill and
there are few other stadiums with a bigger capacity. We all
need the RFU to maximize its income. The international game
funds the rest of rugby as well and frankly Twickenham is a cash
cow!

Interesting thread. For Prem games it seems that we use HQ.
Sarries use Tottenhams’ new ground. London Irish are still
building their home support so don’t need another venue to be
out supported by the opposition 😉.
Outside of London, Leicester, Gloucester, Wasps and Bristol have
large enough grounds that there would be no point in trying new
areas leaving Bath and Exeter (probably Bath) but where? (not
Wales as that seems a bit wrong in trying to expand the English
game). Northampton seem to have a large enough support in North
Norfolk so could see them moving a game from the 15k Franklins
Gardens to the 27k Carrow Road (maybe against Leicester).
Worcester, Newcastle and Sale have small stadiums but have a lot
of competition from football (and the latter two from League)
but I believe Newcastle have had at least one successful game
held at St James’ Park.
I think under Lancaster (ironically) there was a big push to
appeal to the North for the England World Cup with numerous
players being played from the region (most notably in Burgess)
and one game being played in Manchester (Samoa?) so not new.

I think that saints moved a game or two to stadium Milton Keynes
which has a capacity of around 30k

I also went to the AUH game, even went to the drinks reception
Wasps put on at the Emirates Palace for those who purchased
tickets.
I liked it purely for the fact that it was an away game and
getting a few days of winter sun whilst I was there and quite
frankly it was probably a lot easier and enjoyable than an
afternoon at Adam’s Park.
Having said that if it was a home game I wouldn’t have been
quite so hospitable to the idea.
Think we are at the forefront of trying to grow the base already
with our 2 Big Stoop games and will probably not see anything
else our end (bar a knockout HQ move maybe) and whilst after the
first 3 or so BG’s I have subsequently given up my ‘free’ seat
to friends to use I can see once my family get older there will
personally be more of an appeal, the summer one I’m willing to
give it a crack this season and next.
