I remember when the first away strip was brought in, 2004 (?) it
was light blue and Tony Copsey was pictured wearing it scowling
with the comment that we never intended to wear it.
Roll on some years and changing shirts appears obligatory at any
opportunity. At least the 6 nations still stick to the tradition
that you only change if there is a clash and then the home team
changes.
Sadly the RFU seem to have got themselves obligated to play a
home game in the away strip once a season which is always
against the lowest ranked opponent which says a lot about
respect and secondly, and there are studies on this, that
playing with the same strip speeds up reaction time as you don't
have to consciously process friend or foe and this is a reason
why we won't change if possible against "big boy" opposition.
The idea of away strips is purely driven by the hope that rugby
fans will buy two complete sets each year, which is clearly not
happening in any great numbers - the 150 year anniversary strip
being the exception and I amongst other posters really like that
shirt. My only other ones are from the CSF era and the short
sleeve one was only bought as I was going to see some cricket in
SA.
On a marketing front changing the shirt is stupid as product
recognition is very important.

The present red-white away shirt is the best for years; I don't
understand why we can't have Quarters for our BG/Euro shirts
though - in some form or other.
But design/make any shirt that you hope to sell in quantities
work in cotton not blooming polylycraester! And in Stout sizes!

That's a slightly over-simplistic view as I doubt even the most
optimistic CEO would suggest many people buy both strips every
year. Away strips do however give purchasers extra choice - it
could be away one year, home the next. Or if a fan doesn't
particularly like that season's home strip, they have an
alternative (or two).

The players regard it as a lucky shirt, too, after wearing it
for Bristanbul [1] and the Final, which is why they kept it for
another year rather than rotating. I quite like it, though my
favourite away shirts were the 2007ish diamond designs.

I agree that with a home shirt that leaves little scope for
change, the away / BG shirts are a chance to experiment / push
it. My gripe is that, after initially coming up with decent
designs that at least had some relevance to Quins, more recent
designs have just been a generic Adidas design, with some
half-arsed promotional blurb trying to claim it has something to
do with Quins. The latest shirt is a classic example - it's a
stock Adidas design, with blurb saying inspired by our traveling
army.
There is plenty of scope to experiment but still with relevance
to the club. Some of the fan designs you seek knocking about
look great. Quinssa made some nice ones a few years ago too

A few years ago, one of the shirts had a London map. (Basically,
it was the red shirt that looked as though a car had driven over
it).
This seemed a nice idea (although I think it was poorly
executed. I couldn't even tell that it was a map of London.).
But, on further investigation, it looked as though all Adidas
rugby teams around the world had a similar design idea.
Basically, someone in marketing came up with a concept and they
applied it to every team. My one gripe though was that they
actually did it slightly better for one of the NZ teams. For
them, they had the longitude and latitude of their home ground.

I do agree, I would say the recent BG shirts could be "spiced"
up a little more. Shame the club could not run a fan based
competition for designs.

I think all of these issues boil down to how much influence the
club has on the kit supplier and the terms of the deal.
Adidas clearly put more effort in the first few years when they
cared and then have been phoning it in with generic designs
since they decided to bin us 18mths ago. Which they can do as a
global megabrand where Quins shirt sales are undoubtedly a small
rounding error on their revenue.
Don't know anything much about Castore but as they're smaller
and it's a (rumoured) new deal, I'd hope that we'd have more
bespoke/more 'Quins' shirts over the next few years and ideally
a bit more thought about what fans want. Maybe even an away
shirt that's the quarters in alternative or 150th colours!
Here's hoping.

I like the shirt, it’s quite different to any other shirt we
have had.
Regarding design input from the players, I went to a Club night
a few years back and they mentioned how it is important to get
player feedback at the design stage.
Personally, the adidas years have been the best from my
perspective….. different to everyone else in the Prem. I like
the kit and the training gear too…..
But I always think Quins is a tough sell…. They have an iconic
shirt that you can’t really mess with, so away shirts and BG
shirts are always going to be a big part of the sponsorship.
The theory being that most people have a Home shirt, they are
not going to change every two seasons. But they may purchase a
different style…..

I would like to see an away shirt that looked like this:
Front - quarters. Colours blue,white, white grey
Back - magenta white, white, brown
Right sleeve - green + white
Left sleeve - black+white
And, make a long sleeve cotton version to match
