Knock Ons

I was watching Super Rugby at the weekend and yellow cards were
not given for feeble one handed attempts to play the ball.
Surely playing all these different laws is going to have an
impact when the 2 worlds collide.

They're supposed to only be given when they prevent a line
break. I do remember the commentators in one game saying a
player was lucky to get away without a card.
The refereeing of high tackles and shoulder charges remains
dreadful, ditto forward passes...

I would have thought that the referee would have looked at the
TV replay of Andre's alledged kdeliberate knock on. In real
time there would have been a strong argument that he was
attempting to (and did make) the tackle. Very harsh - but as
Sunak would say within the rules :)

I thought it was a poor choice by the ref not to review. The
replay that was shown made it look as if he was wrapping around
the shoulders and his arms were nowhere near the ball, and he
was unlucky that the pass hit him. It might be that on closer
inspection it was deliberate, but it at least warranted a look
before summarily waving the card. As it was, it effectively
turned the game.

"Was he (or she, Reg) in a position to catch the ball with both
hands?" is a comment that you often hear - I've seen quite a few
people catch the ball with one hand...
It's a bit like handball in footy - hand to ball/ball to hand -
somethings you can't react fast enough to get your hand out of
the way.
In many cases, if the ball were caught, the interception may be
just as likely to score as if the initial pass were made; it's
not (initially) always a scoring opportunity. Perhaps the
sanction should always be a penalty unless it is clear that it
was deliberate (if you can tell): defender has to have a
hand/palm to the ball rather than finger tips and must be seen
to not alter the trajectory of the ball other than to enable the
same defender (shortly to become attacker) to catch the ball.

The wrap occurred after the knock-on - the French player had
released the ball before Andre "wrapped".
It was extremely quick in real time, though. I thought the TMO
had confirmed for the ref, hence no further inspection.

It looked a pretty natural tackling motion to me. Often with
these you see players shove that arm out weirdly, or make a bit
of a flap at the ball, but it looked like a genuine tackle to
me. Doesn't mean it was, though.
It's also very annoying when a ref decides to break with
tradition and give the yellow despite the try being scored.

I know what you mean about the tackle but I thought Andre was
trying to be clever, as I said at the time; I thought his eyes
were on the ball. Doesn't mean they were.
The tradition bit fair enough. But wasn't it a try stopping
knock on? I genuinely can't remember. I wonder if that got in
the ref's head, if so. If they hadn't have scored straight away
then penalty try and yellow? I don't know - if it was foul play
no argument.

I really don't think they should give a yellow card in a
situation like yesterdays. I don't have a problem with it being
a penalty, but if it is important that players wrap when
tackling then I think it is dangerous to put something in place
what potentially makes someone reluctant to put their arms
there.
Surely safety is the main thing, and I can see players going to
tackle, seeing the ball being passed and pulling their arm back
to avoid the knock on.
The current rules seem to me to be a disincentive for tackling
safely.
