Interesting. He didn't perform to the highest standard for
probably the last 3 or 4 years of his career.

He didn't perform to HIS highest standard but he was still one
of the 3 or 4 best refs in the world. Who would you rather have
had reffing a game?
Personally, I'd have preferred Barnes or Poite and maybe Peyper
on a good day, but not many others.

Fair enough. I think he used to be world no.1 around 5 or 6
years ago but since then he became a parody of himself and he
didn't even try and referee properly. Every match he was
concentrating more on trying to get a funny one-liner in so all
the pundits could fawn over it, than he was the actual game.

He was awful as a pundit - and sounded out of touch with both
tactics and the rules.
So not sure he’s got this right.

Yes, seriously. What I mean by that isn't that he didn't try to
officiate - I mean he was too wrapped up in his own praise and
public image that he didn't make any effort to keep up with
minor (but important) law changes etc. and was more in the mold
of 'I'm the referee so therefore I know everything'.
