Video seems to show good defence, and very athletic lineout work
for a big guy. Not much in attack though. Not making many yards,
but definitely not getting knocked back.

Yeah. Symons and Tiz leave big shoes to fill literally and
metaphorically.
Both are very solid ‘nuts and bolts’ locks who have good work
rate but they’re different in that Symons’ main point of
difference is how disruptive he is for the opposition in the
maul and around the breakdown whereas Tizard is a good carrying
option.
Herbst would have a hard time replacing all of those things, but
as long as he can deliver the grunt work, his bulk could
complement he likes of Lamb or Hammond very nicely.

What efforts where made to keep Tiz? Where we outbid by Sarries
and why did we not try to match this?

I suspect only a handful of people within the club know the
answer to that, and they're not telling. But my educated guess
would be yes, Saracens put in a strong bid, and Quins were
unable to match it because their contract renewal offer would
already have been up to the cap.
Laurie said at the members presentation that they had gone into
the season with 18 contracts they wanted to renew, and they
successfully re-signed 17 of them. In a competitive environment
where the club would probably have been offering salary
reductions because of the drop in cap, that's a good showing.
But Sarries had a very specific Tiz-shaped hole they needed to
fill, and probably more leeway to do it because reasons.

HARLEQUINS SIGN SOUTH AFRICAN SECOND ROW IRNÉ HERBST
Thursday, 5th May 2022 @ 12:00
HTML https://www.quins.co.uk/uploads/165166052370961/resize_980_350.png
THE CLUB IS DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THE SIGNING OF SECOND ROW IRNÉ
HERBST AHEAD OF THE 2022/23 SEASON
Joining from United Rugby Championship side Benetton Rugby
following a five-year stint with the Italian club, Herbst will
bolster Harlequins’ second row options next season.
The 29-year-old forward emerged as a clear talent during his
time in the age grade programmes in South Africa, appearing for
the South Africa Schools and South Africa U20 sides during his
time with the Blue Bulls in Pretoria.
The 6’6”, 121kg lock kicked off his senior rugby career with the
Bulls in the Provincial Cup and Currie Cup competitions before
graduating to Super Rugby with the Southern Kings in 2017 prior
to moving to Italy to join Benetton.
Playing in both the European Challenge Cup and Heineken
Champions Cup before helping Benetton lift the Pro14 Rainbow Cup
in 2021, the physical tight five forward is well versed in the
highest levels of Northern Hemisphere club rugby.
Commenting on Herbst’s arrival, Head Coach Tabai Matson said:
“We’re delighted to announce that Irné will be joining us next
season. We have been looking to secure the signing of a
physically dominant second row and Irne is someone we believe
will fit in well within our system.
“Irné has proven during his time throughout the age grades in
South Africa and within the highest level of club rugby that he
is a relentless, hard-working lock that can offer a point of
difference for us around the park and at the set-piece.
“When we first spoke with Irné we were impressed by his
aspirations in the game; his desire to keep growing and the
challenge the English Premiership will present him. We’re
excited to welcome him into the Harlequins fold this summer.”
Commenting after putting pen to paper with the London club,
Herbst said: “I’m delighted to have signed with Harlequins. To
join such a prestigious team within English rugby and the
current Premiership champions is a fantastic opportunity.
“Harlequins play one of the most famous brands of rugby in the
world at the moment and an attacking style that’s so clearly
connected to the team’s history and DNA. I’m looking forward to
putting in the work and playing my part in the team.
“This is a team that is very clear on how they want to play and
how they want to operate and I’m eager to get stuck in next
season.”

I hope that after five years with Benetton he isn't going to
need 12 months to build Premiership level (Quins Premiership
level) fitness, as CSW seems to have.

CSW had been out of the game altogether for 4 years, and it's
mentioned in Prep To Win that he had an operation early in
preseason - it's hardly surprising he's taken a while to get a
run out (especially with one of our strongest rosters of locks
in quite a while ahead of him).
Herbst is coming from another rugby club where he's been a
regular starter. I just hope he doesn't live up to the record of
previous big beardy lock signing Geo Cronje.

Interesting that he’s moving from Benetton to us.
I wonder if he spoke to Benetton’s defence coach (Paul Gustard)
about life at Quins?

Well either that or he is fed up and wants to enjoy rugby again.
