Champions Cup
DIR By: Quinston Churchill

I remember there was a lot of upset last season when we rested a
bunch of our frontline players and got thumped by Ulster.
That rest wasn’t the only factor in what happened next, but I do
feel like having a singular focus and a fresher first XV were
big contributors to us winning the title.
No disrespect to our players, but I don’t see us beating this
Montpellier side (currently top of their league), so I wonder if
we’re better served de-prioritising the Champions Cup and going
all out for the league again?
I’m not suggesting we sacrifice ourselves entirely in Europe,
but I feel like our chances of winning the Champions Cup are
significantly lower than our chances of emulating last season’s
title win.

Most of our first 15 has had a few weeks off. I think they
probably need to play to get into form.
I can imagine that there will be a little rotation though e.g.
Start with Lynagh instead of bringing on from the bench. Lamb
and White to play, etc if they become available.
Chis to start. I also think that Morris is very close to
returning.

No reason we need to put out a seriously weakened team for this
one. As Never Sleep says, a lot of players have had a rest
recently. Top 4 is ours to lose at the moment, so less of a need
to keep everyone fit and fresh.
We can rotate certain players without making wholesale changes.
It would be a great shame to top our pool then go out with a
whimper.

This is one of silliest thoughts/suggestion I’ve read on this
board.
The players would be fuming with the suggestion after the hard
work to get through the pool. They have openly talked about
performing well in Europe this season and to be considered a
great club we need to try and compete on both fronts and I think
we can afford to go all out for it after the Irish result.
Additionally I wouldn’t be surprised if Montpellier rotate too
with an eye on winning the Top 14

Yeah I think we go strong as possible against Montpellier out
there and if the result is favourable, rest one or two for the
reverse fixture. If we go strong and get gubbed then we can
always rest for the second leg and we're no worse off.
Still if we're 30 points down after the first leg, that still
equals 'winnable' to this lot.....

Try telling this squad that we don’t think they can beat
Montpellier. Sorry Joe, Joe, Marcus, Dom, Danny, Andre etc,
you’re not going to play in one of the clubs most exciting
fixtures, as we’re saving you for the league.
We’ve got the squad, momentum, and sheer enjoyment to give it
both barrels. Can’t wait.

What on earth. We rested players in a group game, not a
knockout.
I've never heard anything so ridiculous.

Disagree with your logic on this one QC. Its unlikely we're not
going to make top 4, and us overhauling Sarries for a home semi
final is a bit of a long shot. Whether we finish 3rd or 4th in
the table makes no odds really. To be honest I'd rather go to
Welford Road for a semi final given than Sarries
We should be putting out our strongest possible team against
Montpellier.

It wasn’t a suggestion - more a thought that popped in to my
head. ???
Of course I want us to compete on both fronts, I just wonder
whether there’s some element of prioritisation that is taking
place.
It can’t be that ‘ridiculous’ if you think Montpellier would be
thinking about rotating.
Anyway - consider me slapped down. :-X
