Quins without Smith?

Oscar Beard. He'd fill the
Tom-Williams-can-play-10/Matt-Hopper-can-play-10 role pretty
well.

Would be a huge loss but he wants to be a Quin and if he did
ever leave, I’d rather the club continued. wouldn’t you? There
was a time when we’d never replace Easter/Mo/Evans/Robbo/Brown.
Until we did.

I don't think it's fair to say he doesn't want to be here. It's
largely down to money. If we could match what Sarries are
offering him I'm sure he'd be playing for us next season.

decided to move on. So be it and I hope he does well. I don’t
think it will have a significant impact on our squad next season
or in the longer term. I’d rather focus on the abilities of the
19 players who have committed to staying with us who, together
with the players still under contact, will provide us with a
very competitive squad next season.

100% agree. I’m sad to see Tizard going, but the club is
future-proofing. A significant chunk of the players we’ve
extended are academy products who are the future of our first
team. With further cuts to the cap and the new regs on EQPs,
we’re getting ahead of the curve.

This reminds me a little of the time David Strettle left for
Saracens. He was one of 5 senior players up for renewal that
season, including Robshaw, Ugo, George Robson and I think Care.
We were disappointed he left, but COS later explained that the
decision they'd made under the cap was to tell the players they
could only make 4 offers and would accept the first 4 over the
line. Strettle was the one who chose to be the fifth.
This isn't exactly the same, but it will be similar - the club
will have had capacity to offer deals (probably involving pay
cuts) to the players, but only so much room for upward
negotiation.

It’s not unfair. It’s a fact. He had a choice. I don’t
begrudge him more money. But he doesn’t want to stay at Quins
when balanced against (apparently) getting paid more elsewhere.
He will leave and most of us hope he does well but he (and his
dad) are not passive in this outcome.

You don't know whether he'd have stayed if Quins had matched the
offer. That would tell us if he wanted to stay at Quins.
I don't think we should denigrate players for taking a better
offer elsewhere by suggesting they don't want to be here and
negatively comparing them to other players - especially if we
have no idea how those players would have responded to Quins not
being able to match other offers.
Professional sport is a short career and there's zero security
for players. We've lost plenty of players in the past who loved
it here and would love to have stayed but had to be realistic.

Last year we had a player who was offered a deal he didn't want
and went somewhere else, and we had six months of people
insisting it was the club's fault.
This year we've got a player who was offered a deal he didn't
want and is going somewhere else and now it's his fault.
Make your minds up.

Wasn't the player last year initially told he wasn't required?
