I’m perfectly fine with these changes, as EQP need to be
prioritised. If Quirke wasn’t behind old faf, I imagine he would
be further along in the England squad, as an example.
We’ve always had a more than healthy home grown selection at the
club, with our foreign imports being the luxury rare import as
opposed to the core of the team.

I agree too. It is striking to see the difference between clubs.
We have a good record of high quality targeted signings to
complement a core of home grown quality players.

I agree with the position, but I do think the Quirk/De Klerk
example isn’t a great one (thought prompted more so by Erasmus
recently using it).
Quirk is 20, when Sale went out looking to find a new Scrum Half
he was 17. Quirk has had the chance to develop under and learn
from a world class 9, and with now he’s ready to step up Faf is
moving on. Whether by accident or design I’d say that’s exactly
how the foreign player slots should be used.
It’s having mid-tier players hold long stints in a starting
spots that really cause an issue, it takes focus from
development of homegrown players or perhaps giving a chance to
an academy graduate from another club, a talented player from
the Championship or BUCS Super Rugby.

One other thing though, have Rugbypass got the definition of
‘foreign’ correct here? They seem to be equating it to
‘non-EQP’, but my understanding is that players from the rest of
the UK wouldn’t (and legally couldn’t) be classified as
‘foreign’, hence having the EQP target of 15 in a 23 as a
separate figure.
An unexplored aspect of the change then could be an increase in
value / demand for quality Welsh / Scottish / Northern Irish
players in the Prem.

Irrespective of the rules and regulations and being in England I
just want to support a local club comprised of mainly English
players with a significant number coming through academy/junior
routes supplemented by a small number top quality signings as
Rocker says. Fortunately with Quins I can.
A few years ago I used to ask a long-time Arsenal supporting
mate of mine why he still bothered supporting them bearing in
mind they often didn't have an English player in the team, had
an overseas manager and played at a ground called the Emirates.
How could he connect to the club? Nowadays when you look at
rugby clubs like Sale and Leicester you begin to ask the same
question.
