He's become a phenomenal player since he returned from NZ, and
he has the best anagram name.

Well, as Jammy said, it wasn’t a great tactic. But if you really
want to counteract it then just move him somewhere else or get
someone else close by to catch it instead. This is called rocket
science. 😀

If it’s that simple, why didn’t they do that? Could it be that
the opposition just kicks to the zone of the field that that
player is covering?

Because there was no need?

I seem to recall something either in an article or as part of
commentary that went along the lines that teams will often
choose to kick to the oppositions best ball
returner/counter-attacker at a kick-off. The theory is that at a
kick-off the player will be receiving the ball somewhere deeper
inside their own 22. They will carry the ball up & usually get
stopped somewhere within their own half, hopefully behind the
10m line. That player will then be in the ruck, unable to do
anything. The alternative that the team kicking is trying to
avoid is having someone like Marchant getting the ball on the
second phase from a quick ruck when the defense hasn't had a
chance to set properly after rushing forward from the kick-off.

If we want Marchant to be available for a kick chase, we just
set up a second ruck using Dombrandt or Marler as a carrier off
a short pass and recycle. Which we have done plenty of times
when necessary (we also do it to set up a better angle).
