Rugby's a bigger deal in France than it is in the UK and it's
easier for people to make money from it, basically. Not having
to pay for your stadium is a major benefit straight off the bat.
Basically it's a combination of several favourable factors:
1) It's a huge country compared to most of the rugby playing
nations
2) It's hugely popular as a sport in that country
3) Local governments provide a lot of assistance
4) Merch sales are ridiculous compared to other countries
5) Lots of rich owners a la English club rugby (but even more
so)
6) A culture of sponsorship that is quite different to what we
have
So you have a wildly popular sport that has a lot of financial
benefits already in a large, affluent country - it's an entirely
different beast to any other rugby-playing nation.
Even when the "match day experience" was rubbish, Toulon were
getting good crowds in Pro D2. There's a desire for rugby,
especially in the south, that just doesn't exist in most
countries in the same way.

Just taking this back to what was said, the issue highlighted in
the presentation was that discounts were too generous.
Specifically the benefit to the purchaser / cost to the club of
a season ticket versus being able to sell the same seat per
match. There’s a logical inference that ST costs will see a
steep rise, but not necessarily match tickets (which seems to be
largely what is discussed above).
Purely as a hypothetical; if you’re planning on the basis of
regular sell out crowds, one option would be to just discontinue
STs for the Joker seats. People could chose to move to the next
level up or buy per match. Without any other price increases
you’d double the revenue from those seats and retain the entry
point cost to watch a match.

The 12.30 kick off time I think puts a lot of people off, if
they are coming from further afield. I’m making this game but to
get to the ground with enough relaxation time, I’m having to get
a train at 0830

Very few.
Mainly because no one is charging £21 to watch a game of 2ndXI
cricket. County Championship 2nd XI cricket is free to watch.

Comparisons with footy are not that useful, as it has
support/momentum; besides, the match day experience in football
offers so much more:-
- Hate of the opposition - no chance for good chats while
sharing beer/coffee/water
- Fighting in the trains, streets, stands etc
- Throwing bottles/coins at players/officials
- Fans shining lasers at players eyes
- Horrendous language and abuse
- Little to no respect for the officials by the players
- Skewed (by money) distribution of skills/cup wins/league
titles
- Dreadful haircuts/pies - okay, rugby shares this...
The scenes and activities of an admittedly small minority - some
~ 5,000 according to the press or 7% of the crowd - at Wembley
during the Euros and the abuse of Danish and Italian fans was
awful - defend that if you can. They might be a minority, but
their actions affect the majority, many of whom are totally
innocent and disdainful.
Cup game tickets - and it has been a while since we had a home
post-group game - were always more expensive and STH prices have
been held low for quite a few seasons now. It may be a bad time
for many, with household incomes affected by several factors,
but these rises were always going to happen.
I'd much, much rather watch Quins at these prices...

Less season ticket holders = more ticket money, if selling out
every game
Should the results go south, will this affect attendance?
Possibly
It’s a big risk to alienate loyal supporters if you increase too
much, and to just keep going on that the match survey justifies
all changes isn’t the right approach

Plus the early kick off time and engineering works... All facts
that the club knew when they chose the high prices. Personally
think it was naïve not to offer an early bird discount based on
point 3.

I watched it live last night and just thought I'd add that
Laurie specifically said that whilst ST prices will be going up,
it will be a phased approach (presumably stepping up the price
over a number of seasons) and he tempered it with an
acknowledgement that it needed to be "proportionate and
reasonable". So yes, we'll see prices going up, but it didn't
feel to me like he was talking about ratcheting them up 30-50%
in one go. Maybe I interpreted it wrong, but we'll know either
way soon enough...
Sadly, it's a reality that, either way, this will mean a tough
decision for a number of loyal fans - but for the first time in
a long time, the "this is unsustainable" management speak we've
heard a lot of in the modern era is starting to genuinely feel
like "this is now about survival". Also, the suggestion that
some are making that "ticket prices won't make a dent" - like
there's just the one thing that needs changing to fix things,
but it's not that - is patently ridiculous. It all adds up and I
definitely got the sense last night that this is one of many
projects Laurie has in motion to get the business back on a
solid footing. He was honest, transparent and didn't shy away
from the tough questions - from where I'm sitting, just the CEO
we need (and have needed for many, many years).
And yes, jumping down off the stage to hug the supporter who
spoke movingly about her mum was a really classy, humble touch.
