Re: Varsity - Sat April 2nd - Twickenham

After the last match the Clubs did a survey about what people
thought should be done about the match bearing in mind it has
been traditionally mid-week in December and crowds have been
declining for years. My input was:1. It would be better played
at the Stoop as the crowd could fit in there and give the game
some atmosphere; 2. Midweek no longer worked as people were not
going to take an afternoon off for the game anymore; 3. Ticket
prices were too high bearing in mind the standard. I would
expect most people who responded said the same things. So it has
been moved to the Spring now and on a Saturday in the hope of
increasing attendance. But it is still down for Big Stoop (so no
atmosphere and the venue 1/4 full) and the ticket prices , in my
view, are eye wateringly expensive for the game. It looks like
only the Lower Stand at Big Stoop is available and the higher
end of that is £50 per seat and the bottom end £35. Too much.So
I am not going this year. I appreciate they probably have to be
high because of the cost of hiring Big Stoop-so, for heaven's
sake, play it somewhere else where the prices for seats can be
lower and the ground can be full.

I've removed the bickering that this thread descended to. Can we
stick to the forum rules regarding posts please.

Some bickering is enjoyable...in moderation.

Agreed. Also I'm hampered not knowing the relationship between
people. If Person A calls Person B "big nose", that can look
insulting if you don't know the two are friends and this is just
banter. In this case someone complained about the thread
descending into bickering, otherwise I'd probably have left it.

I'm assuming this is something to do with whoever it was that
wrote things on posts I'd done.
Anyway, back to the original point -- I do wonder how much
longer the Varsity match needs to be treated as some kind of
"event".
I don't particularly have anything against it, it just seems
irrelevant in the world of modern professional rugby -- or
indeed to anyone generally interested in going to an event or a
big sporting occasion.
It's not been the case in several decades that these two teams
have any kind of position in the rugby world that makes them
interesting, and we are 30 years past anyone caring if Oxford or
Cambridge is better at rugby even if you went to either of them
- or indeed Hull (as we know Oxford is a complete dump).
I vaguely understand the Boat Race as now having become a bit of
an "english summer fixture" but it's mainly an excuse for a
certain demographic of people in london to go drinking by the
river - but again I wonder what the tv audiences for it are like
now in a multi-channel digital world where we're not all starved
of sport to watch.
It would seem slightly less 20th century if we kicked the
varsity match out and put on a tournament that was more relevant
to growing the fan base of the sport - or growing participation.
Again, I'm not bothered if the varsity carries on (before
someone accuses me of being "upset") -- but even as a dull old
bloke who's 50 and went to a posh school and university - it
feels utterly irrelevant. Sadly, replacing it would require the
RFU to have some kind of vision.

Until those involved aren't making a profit, I guess. Which also
answers your last sentence. If the RFU weren't making money on
the event, I doubt it would be at Twickenham.
Not that I have any issue. For me, it's much the same as the BTS
concert that was supposed to be at Twickenham. Of very little
interest to me but if others enjoy it, there is minimal
disruption to local residents (beyond the fact that we all moved
to Twickenham knowing that there is a bloody big stadium there)
and it helps to fund the RFU then what's the problem?

But presumably the RFU get some money for putting this on. What
sort of "vision" turns down free cash? To me it's like the
Army/Navy. I have no affiliation to either so why would I
bother. But if other people do and generate money that the RFU
then uses to promote rugby, I can't say I have a problem with
the fixture.

Pretty much where I'm at. If the two unis want to play at
Twickenham and stomach the cost of hiring the place then it
makes sense for the RFU to keep taking the revenue.
