I think we are saying pretty much the same thing. But it's the
immediate forward acceleration that defines the pass as forward.

Rotation is of course another factor. ie spin.

They've got a patent application

and that's
exactly what they're doing. They track the position of the ball,
and the position of all the players. If one of the players and
the ball have corresponding positions then they associate that
that player has possession of the ball. They then define a
relative velocity of the ball with respect to that player. If
the component of this relative velocity in the
tryline-to-tryline direction is positive (i.e. forward) and
greater than a threshold, it's flagged as a potential forward
pass.
So for the system to work you need every player wearing a
tracking device from these guys as well.
