I don’t think it will accelerate in the direction of play
towards the goal line though: it will slow down once passed, so
it’s hard to imagine any acceleration, only deceleration…

have been made by teams wearing black? Nullifies New Zealand,
Sarries and Exeter in one fell swoop

It will (briefly) accelerate if it's a forward pass because it
has gone forwards from the player. If it's flat its initial
velocity is the same. We are talking instances really but
imagine a quarterback - you can't deny the ball accelerates away
from him. 😁

So are you saying that (imagining a field with lines
perpendicular to the touchlines) if a running player passes at
point A, and then reaches point B at the same time that the ball
also reaches point B, that this must have been a forward pass,
because the decelerating ball, in the absence of a continuous
source of forward energy, has still reached point B at the same
time as the continuously running player?

Agree - but I was referring to net forward acceleration; the
ball will certainly accelerate after the pass, but I suspect
that, unless very close to passer, it will have decelerated by
the time the receiver catches it, so perhaps no net
acceleration???
Perhaps the Institute of maths/physics can help us out on this
one - I’m a lowly geologist!

I think I can clear this up. It's forward if the ref says it is
and it's not if he says play on.

Yes, I've been getting a slight stabbing pain on my right side
about 2 inches below the level of my nipple; been wondering what
that might be.
