mentioned a very strong wind. Generally the forces acting on the
ball once passed are all negative - gravity and wind resistance

JG has got my point correct. The force involved is just the
force from the ball being thrown - there is necessarily an
acceleration when that happens, and if that acceleration has a
positive component in the direction of the tryline, then the
pass is forwards.
The problems in implementation would be (as JG said) calibration
of where the trylines are and precision and accuracy of the
readings, and I could also see there being problems with changes
of possession, as well as other things that I'm sure I'm not
thinking of.

passing the ball is always going to involve that. I get what
you're saying - if the ball suddenly starts moving towards the
goal-line faster than before it was released, you could use that
to infer a forward pass*.

You've got that pretty much spot on there, my only slight
nitpick would be that acceleration is the rate of change of
velocity, rather than just the change in velocity - the
difference being that a rate of change means "change per second"
(or any other unit of time).

Thanks for ignoring my update.😁

To be fair, I'd started writing my reply before you edited your
comment!

Fair enough. Actually I didn't really read your post properly
and also skim read JG's explanation.
I corrected my comments having thought about it and before I
re-read JG'S and then yours.
My bad.
Had I paid a bit more attention I probably wouldn't have
commented at all. 😁

Cheers, I did have it as that originally but I rewrote that post
about six times!

I wish I'd paid that much attention to detail! 😁

More of a question than a solution here, being neither a
mathematician or physicist, if the VAR technology for soccer
offside was adapted for forward passes, i.e, a line across the
field at the moment of release, meaning that the receiver must
catch it behind aforesaid line or its gone forward, would that
end all the discussion about hands pointing forwards, backwards
or to Timbuctu, be easily eradicated, and literally (or even
laterally) a line being drawn on the whole debate?

I think this video

explains why that wouldn't work
pretty well

Treecko, thanks but the video causes more confusion, the ball
wasn't passed forward but travels forward, so it went forward,
regardless of intent, so infringement. The laws should prevent
forward movement of the ball to simplify calls and let everyone
watching see for themselves without slomo or magnifying glasses.
I think being stricter would cause players to be sure they were
passing back, resulting in steeper attacking lines, which would
hopefully create quicker passing and faster runners
receiving, giving us more of what we want to see.
