HARLEQUINS MAKE THE TRIP TO THE WEST COUNTRY LOOKING TO MAKE IT
FOUR WINS IN A ROW
Harlequins' coaching group have made five changes to the Quins
starting XV that will take on Bristol Bears this Sunday at
Ashton Gate in Round 20 of the Gallagher Premiership season.
There is a whole new front-row as Simon Kerrod, Jack Walker and
Will Collier will all pack down after making strong
contributions as Impact Players in last week's 24 - 10 victory
over Newcastle Falcons at The Stoop.
The remaining changes take place in the Harlequins backline.
Will Edwards starts in the ten jersey, replacing Tommy Allan,
and in-form academy player Oscar Beard will be looking to
continue his fine try scoring form out on the wing.
Santiago Garcia Botta, Luke Wallace and Scott Steele all return
to the matchday 23 and are named amongst the Impact Players.
They are joined by Luke Northmore and Louis Lynagh who were both
released by England earlier this week ahead of Quins' trip to
the West Country.
Head Coach Tabai Matson said: “When you look back at all the
games and results in the last month or so it doesn't matter who
you're playing or where the opposition are in the table. Looking
ahead at the game on Sunday, although Bristol are in the bottom
third of the table it doesn't reflect their programme and at any
moment they can explode and make you look stupid.
“We're preparing for the Bristol side that we have arm wrestled
a number of times last season. We're constantly being challenged
to prepare the right game plan and make sure the week leading up
to the games go well, which is enjoyable. I truly believe it is
the tightest competition in the world.”

Considering the unavailable players, that's a decent side and a
potentially game changing bench.
It's a strong Bristol side and our centres will have their work
cut out with Radradra back, but I think Quins probably have the
edge late in the game, and I assume Care and Green will be
looking to exploit the inexperience at 9 and 15.
Half worried, half intrigued about what would happen if Edwards
gets injured, though. Would we move Andre to 10? Or Green?

Have to say I'm relieved that Bristol have newbies in key
positions.

Not a bad side. Its interesting Kerrod is prefered to SGB.
Will be a tough game, as that's fairly experienced Bristol pack.
Sheedy and Radradra we need to be very careful of and try and
keep them out the game as much as possible.
I'll go with a narrow 28-23 loss.

I was going to say our pack probably has a lot more club
experience than theirs, but it does strike me just how few of
our players are internationals - and that's with Collier and
Lewies having a handful of caps between them. 10/15 with no
caps. Collier (2), Lewies (1), Esterhuizen (8) very little
international experience. Only Care and Jones with decent
numbers.

I take that as a positive rather than a negative, though.
Successive Quins DoRs have said that they want the core of the
squad to be close to international level without being away for
long periods of time - and then we have a few superstars on top
of that. When we're really lucky, we get a player whose
international career is over but is still a stellar performer
like Care or Nick Evans.
At the moment, we're as close to that ideal as I can remember.
Wilco, Collier, Lewies, Symonds, Andre, Northmore, Lynagh and
Green are all in that category, and arguably Walker and four of
our five top back rows are at a similar level. Care, Allan and
Jones look to be out the other side of their international
careers, which amounts to the same thing.
None of those are players who'd look out of place pulling on an
international shirt, though there might need to be a longish
injury list for that to happen for some of them.
We still have to accept that Smith, Dombrandt, Marler and
probably Marchant will be away with England for long periods.
Unless Tuilagi gets fit again, or Marler opts not to.
