Yeah, and like i said I thought a red card was very harsh.
Yellow most certainly. but the tackling player made an effort
akin to something I would if I was asked to suddenly tackle him
shortly after necking a pint. Also, there have been similar
incidents in many games where these "hand offs" if you like, go
unpunished, or are given a yellow. So its more about consistency

As far as I recall, hand-offs are ok - but forearms to a
defenders face are not

Right, it's a strike to the face rather than a push with the

I'd rather try to achieve consistency by complaining about
yellow cards (or less) for forearms to head than red cards.

Seen lots of people online referencing the height of the tackler
during the VDM incident... but it's totally irrelevant. No
matter what you think of the tackler's technique, he's totally
legal until such point as he tackles the ball carrier around the
neck or head. Him being bolt upright is not a mitigating factor.
He copped a forearm to the chops and red card was absolutely the
right decision.

I have never understood why the choke tackle with two defenders
and the ball carrier is deemed a maul. If other attackers pile
in then fine, but with only the ball carrier it doesn't meet the
Laws' definition of a maul as a minimum of two players from
either side engaged.

Is it though? If no-one from the ball carriers side joins in
then the ball carrier wil just get carried down the pitch. No
need for the ref to blow up for that.

Just so. It only becomes a maul when a second attacking player
binds on, but if they don't, then the defending players can
literally carry their teammate from one end of the field to the
other.
I think many of the people bemoaning the game going soft and all
that forget that the choke tackle wasn't a thing back in their
day, so it's not that the game has gone soft, so much as it's
bringing in sanctions to address relatively recent behaviour
which increases the risk of head clashes.
Now if anyone could explain how the ref managed to go from
"maul" to "tackle, release" when Ireland had taken the ball to
ground in the maul, I'd love to hear it! :D

I think that if the maul just goes to ground then it remains a
maul, whereas if the defending team manages to get onto the ball
carrier and bring him to ground it's then a tackle. That being
said, I don't remember the specific instance you're talking
about, so I might be completely wrong.

I've never understood with a choke tackle why the defending team
are allowed to collapse the resulting maul and win the turnover.
Why can you legally collapse a choke tackle maul but not any
other maul?
