And yet successive professional coaches in three teams have used
him as much on the wing as in the centre. Could it be that they
know something we don't?

No, they know exactly the same thing:
1) He was expected to play centre in NZ but Reiko Ioane needed
to play 13, so they tried him on the wing
2) His best chance for England selection is being flexible
enough to cover multiple positions - Tuilagi, Slade, Daly,
Lawrence are all expected to play at least 2 positios
3) He's decent there and it's often the case that it's better to
get him on the pitch than a kid, and sometime it's best to have
him and Northmore on the pitch.
It's not that complicated. If he was Eddie's 13 for the last 2
years, he'd not be playing much on the wing. But it's useful
flexibility.

All of which does rather show that Quinalan was wrong to

Nah. You can play as a winger without being a winger. Marchant's
a 13 making a decent fist of playing wing. Ugo was a winger
playing fullback for a while.

Marchant on the wing makes more sense for the Wuss game given
what Vailanu did last week against Bristol.

God Carling at FH was a dreadful experiment, I still have
visuals of his penalty kick in front of the posts that hit the
corner flag :-)

So what does he have to do be classed as a winger?
He’s convinced three coaches. Even you’ve said he’s a decent
winger. Is it possible that he’s a wing/centre rather than a
centre?
Players can be proficient at more than one position.
