As someone who was medically discharged from the Royal Navy I
tend to agree with you, it is embarrassing. It is not an event I
aim for. I know a lot of former oppos who go and unfortunately
the minority let the side down. It is embarrassing to see some
of the behaviour. It would be handy to have the military police
in attendance as a duty so that they can monitor the behaviour.
Please do not think all those who are serving and those who are
no longer serving are all the same based upon this event.

Being ex-Army (24 years) I too agree that the minority let both
sides down. Military police, both RMP and Shore Patrol, attend
on duty in support of the Met but mostly inside the stadium. It
does appear that they have been less 'vigorous' in later years
compared to earlier no nonsense responses, possibly due to
complaints from non-serving personnel getting caught up? Before
the event serving personnel are warned any arrested will be on
Courts Martial so I do wonder if it is ex-members causing a lot
of the trouble? Also many serving will arrive on coaches and
never leave the stadium confines. Food for thought.

Had a great time deployed on HMS Ocean and even played for them
against a French naval base side in Toulon, it was very one
sided in our favour so us pongoes ended up playing for the
french to even it up. That evening we all went and watched the
classic All Blacks vs Toulon great day and evening.
Service police do patrol alongside civilian police and I’m sure
there are trouble makers across all who go to the event. So not
one grouping alone. Sadly I just think it’s got too big. Hold it
in a smaller ground.

Has it always been at Twickenham? I remember watching some Army
games back in Aldershot in the 80's - pretty sure one of them
was v Navy...

I'm also ex RN (24 years served) and am also appalled by the
behaviour of some people attending this game as it has got
bigger
I have attended many times on coach trips from ships and shore
bases and stayed in the confines of the ground so have been
unaware of the carnage in town. Unfortunately in recent years
the behaviour of some of the coach parties at Fleet services
leaves a lot to be desired especially service units coming from
the West Country
A lot of pubs and clubs in the Portsmouth area run trips now and
many people use it as an excuse to get hammered first thing in
the morning instead of a beer with breakfast and then a couple
of sociable drinks on the trip up and then trawl the car park
looking for old shipmates (in my case very old!!)
One good aspect of the game is the passion with which the
National Anthem is sung

Aren’t all teams and sports matches meaningless unless you have
a vested interest? So unless you’ve been part of the service
community I guess you’ll never understand the rivalry. The
carnage I’m with you completely unnecessary.

To some people, obviously not on here, Harlequins v Saracens is
"two meaningless teams compete against each other in a
meaningless fixture", for some people sport is meaningless! The
same charge could be laid against the recent Leeds United v
Manchester United football match which required 900 police to
keep some sort of order. Sport has so many benefits, both
physical and mental, that it can never be regarded as
meaningless at any level from school level to World Cup.
Sadly though, chaos and carnage does occur at many fixtures (and
not just sporting) largely because of a lack of respect in many
of todays society.

That may be true but they’ve been saying that for about the last
10 years, so while it might happen it also might not.
