The schools point is very valid in my experience.
Unsurprisingly, growing up I knew loads of lads who played union
but none who played league.
If I remember correctly, I was the only player in my club team
who went to private school. I think none of the rest played any
code of rugby at school (bar the odd PE session). There simply
wasn’t the space for pitches at the state schools nor
(seemingly) much interest from teachers.
Needless to say, the local private schools all played union. For
school we played against one state school at union - the rest
were all fee-paying.
So my opinion is that back then if a kid didn’t have somebody to
take them to a league club, it’s unlikely they will have had
much exposure to the amateur game. Whereas, if they went to a
private school, they’d almost definitely try union. (at least
the boys would).
Jump forward to now and one of my teammates is a PE teacher in
SW London. He has mentioned that the RFL have been very good at
introducing their version of touch into schools. As a result,
his school enters league touch competitions rather than union. I
can see how that might funnel those kids down the league route …
if they can find a club.

You obviously missed the Yorkshire civil war when Leeds Carnegie
had the audacity to claim the name Yorkshire Carnegie.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there Yareet. It’s a
chicken and egg situation . With Union perceived as a posh code
and League as working class there’s always been a divide which
would have been a problem. Posh schools wouldn’t play League and
state schools probably went the football route. As they say
there is a north south divide with the north supposedly more
working class hence the proliferation of League teams in top
tiers.
I came across a map of all the League teams at all levels
in the UK and there is a fairly even spread over England with a
hugely dense amount up north where you would expect. There were
hardly any in the south west though. Or Scotland & Wales. It
surprised me that there were so many down south but it did show
that it was far more popular in a line just above Wales like
what Fred’s maps showed.

According to Ben Cole they have nominated other grounds which
are
Ealing - Stonex Ground!
Doncaster - Kingmead

I think you mean Keepmoat Stadium - which is the Doncaster
Rovers football stadium (Capacity: 15,231)

I just read the Ben Coles article.
He is suggesting that they proposed ground shares in previous
years, but they have not proposed any ground sharing this year.

I did read that Ealing were set to play at QPR if they won the
league but clearly this was wrong.
(This is my attempt at the most pointless post of the week).
