Good work Fred, I think this illustrates my point very well.
Just to answer the success question about Sale and Newcastle, I
agree that in a performance way they have both been successful
and hold their positions in the top flight consistently ( apart
from 1 season for Falcons) . However, the attendances are
nothing like most of the other teams in the Prem. You would
think that having the exclusivity of being the only Premiership
rugby clubs for miles around that if union was big up north you
would have huge crowds in very large cities. As I keep saying it
makes no sense when, as you point out yareet, the north has
provided a large and valuable contribution to the National team.
I went to Fulham when they started the team back in 79 and
there were crowds of 7000+ at the start but I think they fell
away when the novelty wore off. Again you would think that
having one team in London would guarantee big crowds but it
doesn’t.

I think that rugby league works really well is that the clubs
are so close together and to travel between and this makes it
easy for at fans and there are lots of local derbies.
Basically, a small area of the country supports a lot of teams.
Basically, I think that for the same reason, Ealing would be a
success as they will have good Derby matches. London has enough
people to support 40000 season ticket holders (assuming 10k per
team)

So by your measure, the only factor which constitutes whether a
club is a success is their attendances over the past few years?
Not how they’ve achieved on the pitch. Not what the attendances
were previously. Not even how those attendances have improved.
Nope, because Sale and Newcastle haven’t had 10k+ every game
recently, we should cancel rugby union in the North.
And for the third time, how exactly does that grow the game?

I didn't think anyone was disputing the success of Newcastle and
Sale. I thought the original thread was simply looking at the
North/South split by noting that there has always been an
audience for League in the North but not in the South and vice
versa. And by pointing out that there are only two Union
Premiership professional teams in the North and their crowds are
relatively small and the only attempt to place a professional
League team in the South, after an initial boost, has also met
with small crowds.The question is: why? In Union terms, as I
pointed out earlier, there were, in the amateur era, a number of
clubs in the North but crowds in those days (even down here)
were never huge. It is odd that League has remained so dominant
there in the professional era. And I remain surprised that a
League team has never really worked for crowds in the South
bearing in mind the huge catchment area.

Not sure I can see how this quote (which what started this
debate) is just “noting that there has
always been an audience for League in the North but not in the

Union has strong roots in the North (as I hope my post showed).
If we’re only looking at the number of pro clubs, Devon and
Cornwall have been abysmal at union. Excluding London, the South
East is a wasteland.

Perhaps a more accurate measure woul be to see how many Rugby
Union clubs at all levels there are distributed across the
country. (No pressure Fred) . From a Premiership or Championship
view your right Yareet those areas are devoid of representation
except for The Pirates. But having traveled through these areas
and visited plenty of local rugby clubs in them I have seen no
evidence of League being played but I’m sure there must be some.
I’ve no idea what it’s like up north at the local club
level, maybe you know Yareet but I bet there are more League
playing grass roots clubs than down south.
I’m not saying there is no Union up north so maybe I
should have said League and Some Union up north, Union and one
League team down south.
I’ve been waiting for someone to start a discussion as to
where the south ends and the north begins just to complicate my
original statement even further. I didn’t realise it would be
such a controversial thing to say and it’s refreshing that it
hasn’t descended into name calling and insults. Yet.
