O/T - English Championship
DIR By: SwindonQuin

With the championship season getting into the final stages and
Ealing leading the way, but its quite tight and not much room
for error in the top four:
1st = Ealing @ 56 points played 13
2nd = Doncaster @ 54 points played 15
3rd = Jersey @ 53 points played 15
4th = Pirates @ 51 points played 13
All top four are still to play each other so could be
interesting with Ealing vs Doncaster & Ealing vs Jersey with
Pirates having to play Jersey & Doncaster!
Come on your Pirates!

I think that Pirates will be disappointed with Saturday's
result. They were likely targeting a BP win.
A good effort from Richmond though.

Does anyone know if Ealing have a venue to play at should they
get promotion?

I think they are planning on ground sharing.

I understand Ealing and Doncaster have suitable grounds
identified and have submitted them for approval.
Jersey do not, and as they would never be able to fill a 10,000
seater from the island population are unlikely to ever have one.
Pirates are still trying to get the Stadium for Cornwall built,
but it will not be this season.

Is there promotion at the end of the 2021/22 season? I had a
feeling that the 13 club league with no relegation would
continue into 2022/23. I may be wrong though.

As far as I'm aware 1 team up from the championship this season
making its a top 14 and then no relegation next season.
Normal 1 up 1 down from season 23/24

Ealing and Doncaster are the only two clubs to have submitted
the 'paperwork' applying for membership of the Premiership. This
means only they can be promoted.....in theory.
Ealing had an agreement in place with QPR to groundshare should
they and not Sarries earn promotion for this season, although
that was refused by the RFU (NOT Prem Rugby).
I believe that agreement is in place again for next season
should they make it (tweaked for due process). Vallis Way is a
huge site (check out their new indoor training pitch) and
temporary stands could be put up with ease, the issue is more
about local traffic.
There were many rumours regarding Ealing refusing to purchase P
shares and this is true (valued at £45M). But contrary to the
reports that this means they cannot be promoted, in actual fact
refusing to buy them just means the promoted side receive 30%
less revenue than the other Prem teams.
One of two things will happen. Either the 13 teams remain in
place in a fully ringfenced Premiership, or Ealing/Donny will be
allowed in. Relegation will remain with the caveat that the top
Champ side will play the bottom Prem side for that final Prem
spot.
*I'm an ex-Ealing player.

I don’t think Mike Gooley owner or main shareholder (not sure
which) has that sort of money in his back pocket to throw at
Premiership shares. Just crazy to have 3 Premiership Clubs in 10
miles of each other when the north desperately needs a club.

League up north and Union down south is the way of the world.
Neither has had big success the other way round. Crowds are very
small for Union up at Sale and Newcastle. It doesn’t make sense
but that’s how it is. It will be hard to pick up new support at
Ealing but they may be thinking that three Derby games could
bring in extra support.
I thought Pirates were the ones who wanted to get into the
Prem not Donny Knights. Richmond definitely don’t have the
finances or crowds to do it again. Much like the rest of the
Championship.
