You only need two from each side to form a lineout. Once you've
got that the ball can be thrown in.

The business about numbers only applies if the ball isn't thrown
in as soon as the lineout has formed - minimum of 2 players from
each side.

A quick skim of the Laws turns up:

I haven't watched it again, but if there were two from each side
in the lineout then the lineout was formed correctly, but if
there was a retreating Scottish player who had been in the
lineout then it should have been a Free Kick to England.
Still, what's done is done. After all:

For some of the match. For a lot of it they were duffed up in
the forwards and stuck in their own half. But that's sport for
you. The lineout definitely isn't why England lost.

For a good portion of the match - they defended well for 60 mins
and then took their opportunities...
My comment about the line out was, as I'm sure you know,
Bastante sarcástico...
If EJ wants to play expansive, Smith-based rugby, then play it
to the full - not half-cocked; otherwise he (and the team) will
end up with Gustard pie on his face...

Very good analogy there Bolly and highlights playing a glacier
at 9 rather than a rapido.
The only times Ben Youngs injects pace is when he gets a break
and makes 10 metres or so, else it's slow and turgid. The held
up try, he was at least 10 metres away from that maul until it
stopped moving. It frustrates me when Care does it as well so
not just being biased.
Manage the maul, draw in an extra defender and if it needs to
come out, then you're Johnny on the spot. We might as well have
Curry or Simmonds playing 9 at the rucks as they're there a good
30 seconds or so before he is.
Agree with others that Nowell should have been on earlier and
switch Marchant inside as the chance of an aerial 50/50 (had
Smith stayed on) was better.

I'm assuming if there any squad changes it would be soon we
would hear for call ups?
I don't doubt for one second he will still persist with Youngs,
but as an off the bench option Quirke has to be used. Will Manu
get a call up? I'd gamble and probably chuck him in for Italy to
get him up to speed for the business end of the tournament, as i
still think he can make a great impact. Id send Atkinson back to
Glaws
I'd go for
1. Genge
2. LCD (I did say drop him, but I imagine if there is a player
who wants to right his wrongs he will put in a good shift. L/O
wise he is OK anyway.
3. Sinkler
4. Itoje
5. Lawes (If back)
6. Ludlam
7. Curry
8 Dombrandt
9. Randall (It WILL be youngs)
10. Smith
11. Malins
12. Manu
13. Slade
14. Nowell
15. Steward
Simmonds didnt link up massively with Smith nor did he set the
world alight. I think Marchant off the bench adds a good option.
16. Marler
17. George
18. Stuart
19. Simmonds
20. Isiekwe
21. Quirke
22. Marchant
23. Ford
Enough cover within the team for various positions

I reckon Manu won't feature against Italy but would be likely to
feature against Wales assuming he doesn't break again in the
next week or so.

If I'm thinking of the same thing you are, the lineout wasn't
over, and since Youngs wasn't part of the lineout he has to stay
10 metres back until the lineout's over, otherwise he'd be
pinged for being offside
