Well it wasn't fully formed, they hadn't communicated numbers,
so it wasn't a "line out" and it couldn't be a quick one as the
non player had touched it.... So totally dodgy.....

Make your mind up - it had formed or it hadn’t 🙂.
Just needs 2 players from each side and be thrown correctly. It
wasn’t totally dodgy, just a bit of quick thinking.

I'm not sure that's true - if you still have players coming out
of the lineout they need to have retreated fully before you can
take it, and the opposition has to have been given the
opportunity to match up numbers.

Ok, I haven't seen it since, but that's technical. My main point
was that it wasn't a quick lineout - just a normal lineout taken
quickly. So the the ball wiper touching the ball was irrelevant.

According to Brian Moore it was not the same ball which it must
be for a quick line out.

Yes, that's people getting confused with the concept of a quick
throw in as defined in the laws vs a quickly taken lineout.
Certainly in real time it felt like they'd pulled a fast one and
I think on balance they probably fooled the officials a bit too.

As I said, it wasn't a quick lineout - it was normal one taken
quickly. There is a difference. 🙂

Yeah, I know what you mean. A retreating Scot would be a issue.

I've just re watched it again. I think they played fast and
loose with the laws there.
It definitely isn't the same ball.
The line out had semi formed in that there are a few of England
players standing there and Scots players too but there is a lot
of movement Scots players retreating behind, or leaving, the
line out and no sign of numbers being communicated or the ref
saying play on...
It kind of seemed a bit like the whole Italy not doing rucks
thing that one year. It might be within the letter but not the
spirit of the laws....

Not within the letter or spirit of the law IMHO. Once quick
throw in is off the table - which it was, then the ref has to
allow the line to form which it didn't. Ref / touch made a
mistake.
