The problem is he chose the worst of all possible outcomes. 7
points and yellow card.
If he had held it and been turned over at worst it is 7 points,
possibly 5 as near the corner. Caught it and held on a penalty
kick for corner penalty, chance for 7 if successful lineout maul
and conversion otherwise 5 or 3 points but all variable. Also
may have been seen as taken in the air and a penalty to England.
Don't go for the ball probable 7/5 points or outside chance of
the opportunity to tackle.

I thought Marchant was faced with a bit of a lose-lose situation
- he had three players to look at, one with the ball, one
outside him and one inside - he didn't have much chance...
LCD could have caught that (he easily got two hands to it), but
he's a thrower, not a catcher - he's used to the ball leaving
his hands...

Not being to sure of the laws but can you only call a mark if
the ball is kicked from outside the 22 or from anywhere on the
pitch?
If the latter then it makes it even more stupid to do what he
did.
Another point I've thought of is, I agree with the yellow card
but not sure it should have been a penalty try because if he
didn't pad the ball into touch he would have caught it!

A mark can be called for any kick that hasn't touched the
ground. But the ball does have to be held. I don't think LCD was
in a position to actually catch it cleanly therefore a mark
would not have been able to be called and given. With hindsight
he would have been better to just mess the catch and possibly
knock it on or back. But he slapped it forward and directly
into touch.

I believe the law is that a player committing a penalty is
completely disregarded as if he/she wasn't there. Still no
guarantees that Rae would have caught the ball but given the
amount of space he would have had, it's at least probable.

surely all he had to do was line up the Scottish player and as
soon as he caught it muller him into touch, he didn't need to go
for the ball at all. He chose the absolute worse decision to
deliberately slap it down without even attempting to hide the
fact. As consolation at least he and the rest of the players
should have learnt something from that. I didnt think Marchant
had much choice he was dragged across to cover the attack if he
hadnt done that they were in for a try anyway.

Having palmed the ball away with both hands (not just finger
tips) I think it was more than likely he could/would have caught
the ball!
Either way of all the things he could done he picked the
dumbest!
